About this listen

London, 2007. It's summer in the City: the economy is booming, profits are up and the stock market sits near record highs.

But journalist Gil Peck is a lone voice worrying it can't last. Deep in the plumbing of the financial system, he has noticed strange things happening which could threaten the whole economy. But nobody wants to hear it: not the politicians taking credit for an end to boom and bust, not the bankers pocketing vast bonuses, not even Gil's bosses at the BBC, who think it's irrelevant.

When Gil gets a tip-off that a small northern bank has run out of money, everything changes. His report sparks the first run on a UK bank in 140 years. The next day, Marilyn Krol, a director of the Bank of England dies in an apparent suicide.

For Gil, it's personal. Marilyn was his lover: was his scoop connected to her suicide? Or is there something more sinister in her death?©2023 Robert Peston (P)2023 Bonnier Books UK

One of those books where you can’t wait for the denouement but at the same time the reading of it is so enjoyable you don’t want it to end.

Great Read

The story kept me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. Peston's succinct description of the 2008 Crash made a good vehicle for the thriller element of the story.

a thoroughly enjoyable political thriller

A slow paced and somewhat predictable story line. A curious and unnecessary reference to Prince Andrew, who fits squarely into the undesirables box.

an underwhelming and in places predictable twist on a familiar tale

This book confirmed my own opinion of politics and politicians. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent narrator.

Really good listen

An audio book is always much more of an immersive delight when the writing is well complemented by the narrator and these two fine fellows are a literary marriage made in heaven and thanks to their partnership my other half, not being a fan of audio but the physical book, actually listened with me and enjoyed both The Whistleblower and The Crash, its sequel.
Delicious evil doings at highest political and business levels. The Crash especially made me wonder if the book is actually fiction.
Great story. Fast paced, really well written, full of action and never boring.
A couple of moments when Matt Addis sounded slightly hysterical but the situation probably warranted it!
I really hope Robert and Matt have plans to join forces again to make it at least a trilogy.
Very enjoyable. Thank you

Robert, make it a trilogy, please.
