Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A vital and timely book about inspirational nurses and the bravery of patients and families, from the best-selling author of The Language of Kindness.
Nurses have never been more important. We benefit from their expertise in our hospitals and beyond: in our schools, on our streets, in prisons, hospices and care homes. When we feel most alone, nurses remind us that we are not alone at all.
In The Courage to Care best-selling author Christie Watson reveals the remarkable extent of nurses’ work. A community mental-health nurse choreographs support for a man suffering from severe depression. A teen with stab wounds is treated by the critical-care team; his school nurse visits and he drops the bravado. A pregnant woman loses frightening amounts of blood following a car accident; it is a military nurse who synchronises the emergency department into immaculate order and focus.
Christie makes a further discovery: that, time and again, it is patients and their families - including her own - who show exceptional strength in the most challenging times. We are all deserving of compassion, and as we share in each other’s suffering, Christie Watson shows us how we can find courage too. The courage to care.

Only just tolerable
I feel a bit mean giving this book two stars as it is all about care, compassion and the courage to be tolerant and mindful of suffering In all its forms. But it becomes maudlin, self righteous and syrupy. I was, in the end, glad to finish it. Her previous book was much better (by the way, I too am a nurse)

Surprisingly bland and monotonous
It feels bad to criticise a book about good people doing good things in difficult circumstances. But very quickly the earnest, present tense tone extolling the virtue and dignity of nurses and their patients, peppered with Instagram worthy philosophies becomes repetitive. It's sort of one note that ends up sliding along with little emotional or narrative differentiation. I ended up disengaged and bored. Maybe the written version is better to apprehend and make sense of. Like I say, it feels bad to criticise a book about good people doing good things in difficult circumstances. I'm looking forward to reading the book that came first - maybe this one was too driven by publishers wanting a repeat in time for covid.

It takes courage to write such a book
I enjoyed this book and the narrator who is also the writer. I think it took Ms. Watson a lot of introspection and courage to write this book. It is admirable how she succeeded to put into words so many complex situations she and the people around her went through. It is important for those of us who are outside the medical world and, fortunately, get in touch with it only accidentaly or when we chose to, to understand better that those who work there are people like us from all points of view and not superhumans. I was not bothered at all by the rythm of narration. I consider that this rythm is appropriate in order to inspire the compassion, tolerance, acceptace, understanding and, of course, the courage to care that this book speaks about. This is the way we would all like to be treated, should we ever be in a situation to need medical attention. I warmly recommend this book to all those who want to know the other side of the medical "fairy" tale.

A good look into both sides of a nurses life
A range of nursing stories and insights into the professional and personal life of a nurse. I found some of the stories moving and quite emotional. It was interesting and well narrated and I would recommend it. The 4 star rating was purely because it's not quite the book I'm used to and I'm more into medical stories rather than glimpses into people's personal lives. There was nothing wrong with the look into the authors personal life, and it transitions in and out very well, but it's just not my favourite type of book.
