About this listen
Simon Waterhouse and Charlie Zailer are back in best-selling author Sophie Hannah's twisty new psych suspense.
Six couples. One luxury resort. And the perfect murder....
You're on your honeymoon at an exclusive couples-only resort.
You receive a note warning you to 'beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours'. At dinner that night, five other couples are present and none of their tables is any nearer or further away than any of the others. It's as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless - but why would anyone do that?
You have no idea.
You also don't know that you're about to be murdered, or that once you're dead, all the evidence will suggest that no one there that night could possibly have committed the crime.
So who might be trying to warn you? And who might be about to commit the perfect impossible murder?
©2022 Sophie Hannah (P)2022 Hodder & Stoughton LimitedI struggled to believe that people would feel so violently toward s the victim however unpleasant she was.
I hated pretty much all of the characters. Almost every one of them was self indulgent, self obsessed, self riteous, lacking in any moral compass and out of touch with reality.
The beauty of authors like Agatha Christie (and she’s certainly influenced this story) is that they manage to create believable characters who you largely warm to. That adds to the intrigue and shock. There was none of that here. Even though Sophie Hannah has written a lot already that aspect still felt immature as did a lot of the dialogue. It felt more like a debut novel from someone who was “giving it a go” I might give another of her books a read. I’m not sure.
Julie Massey did a good job. Her voice wasn’t comfortable for me to listen to. I found it’s quality a bit grating but I think that’s personal preference rather than a reflection of her ability. Her accents and the range she had with moving from character to character was excellent.
If you’re wavering, give it a go maybe and see what you think.
Quite liked it but hated the characters
