About this listen

1944. Paul Brandt, a German soldier, returns wounded and ashamed from the chaos of the Eastern front to find his village home existing in the dark shadow of an SS rest hut - a luxurious retreat for those who manage the concentration camps, run with the help of a small group of female prisoners.

When Brandt glimpses one of these prisoners, he realises that he must find a way to access the hut. For inside is the woman to whom his fate has been tied since their arrest five years before, and now he must do all he can to protect her.

But as the Russian offensive moves ever closer, the days of this rest hut and its SS inhabitants are numbered. And while hope grows tantalizingly close, the danger too is now greater than ever.

A harrowing story of a ‘holiday home’ for SS officers brutalised by their experiences working in the death camps, and of the Russian advance that ultimately ended the war. A fascinating story based on true events.

An outstanding novel of the last months of the Second World War.

An uncompromising tale leaving little to the imagination. Not in a gruesome way, just in an honest way.

The story reveals the tragedy of what it is like to be you, me, us, and them within scenes beyond control of any of the protagonists, even when they are the ones doing the things which are so reprehensible and horrific.

The story proceeds with little judgment over description.

Yet, is it just not a series of characters seeking redemption? Maybe. It is only natural during quiet moments during intoxication after stress or closeness to mortality.

Like I say, there is little judgement and much empathy, though little sympathy and redemption is a fickle concept if it exists at all.

Sean Barratt does a great job with the pathos of the story, as nothing is over or underplayed.

There are sections where the recording seems to been done at a different time because the voice changes occasionally. Still gets 5***** for everything.

One of my favourite expectations is which character is going to receive the ‘Jackson Lamb treatment’ (Slow Horses). That character often ends up being my favourite, and the idea is delightfully challenged in this story.

Top marks Sean, you’re a genius!

A story about fictional, yet very real people

Thank God for Sean Barrett-fearless narrator of the epic. He finds every nuance and emotion. This will stay with me for a while. Highly recommended with arcs far reaching. The mapping is perfect. When I listen to book of such quality I dread the search for the next read.

Absolutely brilliant. Beautiful, wide ranging and epic.
