Going back to simple board games, vocabulary games, card games and using our imagination can help to train the brain. It seems that technology has just made us mindless consumers of information and we are not really exercising our brain to keep it healthy. Our children can definitely use less time on tech.
Having a positive and growth mindset and having gratitude for the things in life will also have a positive impact on brain health and learning.
All these tips and more are great alternatives to try rather than just relying on the medications that are prescribed to treat learning issues such as ADHD.

Walker uses Biblical references when she speaks of the uncertainty of the post-truth era, and recommends meditation and prayer to teach children to listen to their own thoughts. She encourages parents to teach persistence to their children so they can continue to develop their cognitive skills throughout their lives. When it comes to play time, she says that the parent is the best toy the child can have. I really appreciated hearing that from a professional.
The statistics outlined in the chapter titled “The Right to Read” were mind-boggling. The author used the ballot as a reference, which seems appropriate since the right to vote is one of America’s most cherished rights. I was astounded to hear that 80% of voters cannot read the ballot. My shock continued as she went on to say that 45 million Americans are functionally illiterate. Those are scary statistics, but after listening to this audiobook, it makes sense. Fortunately, she also offers many solutions in the same chapter.
Taking baby steps like staying hydrated, meditating, praying, helping others, eating healthy, and getting enough deep sleep, are just a few of the ways we can approach cognitive learning without getting overwhelmed. These are discussed in detail in The Collective. This audiobook is comprehensive with many suggestions and references. Walker even tackles spoiled brat behavior head-on in the chapter, “Era of Civil Inability”.
As Walker puts it, “it’s time to get off the bus of apathy and into the classroom of life”. I couldn’t agree more. Highly recommended.
