Story
Arguably no person in history had such a direct and negative impact on the lives of so many as Joseph Stalin. Under the Red Tsar terror knew no limits, it did not discriminate; no one was safe, no institution, no single town or village was immune. Yet, following his death in 1953, Stalin was deeply mourned. He had "received the country with a wooden plough, and left it with a nuclear missile shield." And no-one else, some claimed, could have led the Soviet Union to victory in the Second World War.

When not fighting foreign invaders, Afghanistan was torn apart by Civil War from 1990 to 1996, resulting in victory for the Taliban.

‘Il Duce', Benito Mussolini, was one of the key figures in the creation of fascism. Famed for his dictatorial style, his political cunning and admired - initially - by Hitler, Mussolini led the National Fascist Party and ruled Italy as Prime Minister from 1922 until his ousting in 1943. In so doing, he paved the way towards Italy's defeat in World War Two, and some of the 20th century's most destructive ideologies and practices.

Summary
History for busy people. The Cold War: History in an Hour gives a brilliant overview of the unusual and non-violent war between East and West that lasted nearly fifty years. From the end of World War Two to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 the world lived within the shadow of the Cold War. Russia and America eyed each other with suspicion and hostility. World War Two was too recent to be forgotten and a nuclear Third World War remained a distinct possibility.
Post-war Europe was being rebuilt and Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt had to find a way to work together for peace. The Cold War: History in an Hour will help you understand the dynamics of the politics of the time and how Europe and the rest of the world rebuilt themselves after World War Two.Love your history? A great potted history
What did you like most about The Cold War: History in an Hour?
The story is presented neatly and concisely, with some reasonable analysis. Well structured chronologically it gives a great overview to a somewhat overlooked period in recent history.
Who was your favorite character and why?
As a history there are no "characters" per se nor favourites.
What about Jonathan Keeble’s performance did you like?
His delivery is somewhat staccato which works well for this kind of history.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Origins and Consequences
Any additional comments?
Analysis was somewhat lacking - whist insightful when it was made, there could have been much more.

Disgusting amount of bias
Reeks of pro-capitalist bias. Breezes over Nixon and the involvement of Bolivia and worst of all seems to make excuses for USA war crimes in Vietnam. By all means avoid an audiobook with Pro-Soviet bias too. Find one without any bias and learn the facts. But by any means you can, avoid this unless you enjoy your history filtered though red, white and blue. History has no agenda. But this book sure does.

Amazing content for this hourly series
The 'History in an Hour' series is wonderful for anyone wanting to dip their toe into a subject for a great price. However, don't be fooled by them only being an hour long, I have many episodes of the series and each one I have listened to so far is packed with information on the relevant subject, and, is a great primer to explore the each subject further. USA vs. USSR - The Great Showdown!
I’m really enjoying these short quick reads that give a detailed yet fascinating overview of history in this great series of books “History in an Hour”. This one talks about the Cold War and surprisingly goes into a good amount of details in the short amount of time that it dedicates to the topic.
I learned a lot about The Cold War itself and the era and time that all of the heightened tensions between two world superpowers took place back in the 60’ and 70’s.
I highly recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in history, politics, global strategies that have taken us from there to here.

Pulls the war into a cohesive whole
Having lived through this war as a child and young adult, this was a good read to draw everything together into a cohesive whole. I can now look back and see the connection between different events during this time period. Because this war was never declared as a "real" war, it is difficult to give a connected play by play interpretation of events, but the author does a good job of giving an understandable overview.
The narrator does an excellent job-he is British and with his dry sense of humor actually had me laugh aloud once or twice over his droll interpretation.
This book would be helpful to anyone wanting some background info before reading a book taking place during this time period or a book going into more detail on any aspect of this war.
