It’s 1994 in County Donegal, Ireland, and everyone is talking about Colette Crowley: the writer, the bohemian, the woman who left her family to be with a married man in Dublin.

Returning to pick up the pieces of her old life, Colette finds that nothing – and everything – has changed. When the man to whom she is still married denies her access to their children, Colette enlists the help of Izzy, a housewife and mother of two, and the women forge a friendship that will send them on a spiralling journey – one towards a path of self-discovery, and the other towards tragedy.

Strange how a man can speak insightfully of the women's perspective and truthfully about the men. An Ireland trapped in cultural, political and religious traditions and expectations of marriage. A small town reaction to anyone who tries to break free. An exploration of the injustice and double standards between the sexes

I gave book a go after a review in the paper so didn't really know too much before I started listening. The narrator does a great job of bringing the characters to life and I found myself completely swept along by the story. It has comedy, tragedy, pathos and characters to love and hate. Highly Recommended.

A great story, beautifully told.
