About this listen

From the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat, a groundbreaking, eye-opening exposé that makes the convincing case that sugar is the tobacco of the new millennium: backed by powerful lobbies, entrenched in our lives, and making us very sick.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

This is an audio book I could not 'put down'. It told me all about sugar I ever wanted to know and asked questions beyond the trodden path. Great narration too, which made the content alive and easy to listen to. Thank you for this amazing research and for turning it into this excellent audio book.

Amazing and well researched new book on sugar

I'm glad I persisted with this book, as I was going to give up after a few chapters, due to the monotonous america reader.
Full of life changing information, once I was used to the reader I enjoyed the book very much.

Brilliant, informative book.

Well worth a read for those who would like a review of the state of the nation's health and the reasons why westernised lifestyle needs a better understanding for our personal benefit and our children.

Taubes does it again

Inteesting and convincing sadly that at best we do not need sugar and at worst that it is doing urrevocable harm to modt of us and our children. The author reminds ud that he too is subject to confirmatory bias and there are many caveats to the Case. Thus if you ate loiking for a definitive public health mwssage this is more nuanced than the title suggests. I still haveht clearly got why frugtose/glucose aka sugar can uniqueky trigger metabolic syndrome via visceral fat. Did enjoy all the history of sugar and its marketing.

Well presented case not a polemic
