Summary

A family tragedy. A buried secret. What lies hidden in the flames?

A dense, bitterly cold fog has settled over the Wye Valley when Bristol coroner Jenny Cooper is called to the scene of a dreadful tragedy: in the village of Blackstone Ley, a house has burned to the ground, with three members of a family inside.

Though evidence of foul play is quickly uncovered, it isn't long before the police investigation is drawn to a close. It seems certain that the fire was started by one of the victims, Ed Morgan, in a fit of jealous rage. But their infant son is still missing, and Ed had left a message for his surviving wife, Kelly Hart, telling her that she would never find the child....

As Jenny prepares the inquest, she finds herself troubled by the official version of events. What could have provoked Ed's murderous rampage? How might the guarded other inhabitants of the village have been involved? And what could the connection be with the mysterious abduction of a little girl 10 years ago?

Battling to suppress gruelling events in her own life, Jenny soon becomes entangled in another perplexing inquiry that may have surprising links to this one. Can she unearth Blackstone Ley's secrets before it's too late?

My Favourite

I think this is my favourite in the series so far. It is about ordinary people and not a corporate or government conspiracy. Also Alison ,her coroners officer , has returned to work after recovering from a head injury and has a changed personality with a few social filters removed. I much prefer the new Alison to the rather Poe faced and annoying previous incarnation. The crime scene is set in a rather insular village with well drawn characters who all have something to hide .

Loving the Coroner Series

I am really enjoying the series, and I am fascinated with this new world of a Coroner. Its beautifully written and also has a very human depth to it all. One small critique, the Narrator has a beautiful speaking voice, but in my opinion does not try hard enough to work on different accents, so when other characters 'speak' they all sound the same. Other than this, the books are great reading.

Gripping

I have enjoyed every one of The Coroner Series and I love Sian Thomas as narrator. You can almost visualise Melin Bach and the drive into Bristol. The characters are never straightforward- and I particularly enjoyed Alison in this book- beautiful follow-up on her bravery in the last one.

Another brilliant Jenny Cooper tale

I have listened to all the books in this series one after the other and haves loved them all, this being no exception. Jenny is a great character and the narrator is the best I have heard on any audible books. There is only one more in the series and I dread coming to the end of it...

A Disappointing Instalment

I have been such a fun of the Jenny Cooper series. Such a great series. So many riveting stories that Michael Hall so masterfully puts together. So I couldn't wait to get my hands on this instalment. From the get go this story felt somewhat different. It simply didn't have the weight and intrigue that the previous stories in the book series had. As I progressed through the chapters this became more evident. A simple story. Unnecessarily complex. It almost felt as though the author had to write another story about this great character. Such a multifaceted heroine, yet so one dimensional in this instalment. Very disappointed indeed. I do hope that the author picks up his game in the next instalment. Otherwise it will be "goodbye" from me. The performance on the other hand, was simply excellent!

Truly exceptional.

Intriguing storyline with a good dose of suspense thrown in. As always, Sian Thomas brings the story to life.

Back to basics here - a crime and an investigation. Then lots of loose threads which our Coroner can't resist tugging on, a busy lot of people with so many agendas the fun seems in no danger of ending. Very good.

Where's The Next Book?

I got totally obsessed with this series. I had no real knowledge of how the UK Coroner's Office worked. But I loved the character of Jenny. She is flawed but unstoppable. Now I want the next book to be published and worried it may never happen. This story's a true mysteries you must pay attention. Still the author has managed to make it thrilling not only cerebral.
