Summary

Number one best-selling author and master of suspense Jeffery Deaver returns with the 13th Lincoln Rhyme thriller, which sees a crime go global....

The only leads in a broad-daylight kidnapping are the account of an eight-year-old girl, some nearly invisible trace evidence and the calling card: a miniature noose left lying on the street. A crime scene this puzzling demands forensic expertise of the highest order. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are called in to investigate.

Then the case takes a stranger turn: a recording surfaces of the victim being slowly hanged, his desperate gasps the backdrop to an eerie piece of music. The video is marked as the work of The Composer....

Despite their best efforts, the suspect gets away. So when a similar kidnapping occurs on a dusty road outside Naples, Rhyme and Sachs don't hesitate to rejoin the hunt. But the search is now a complex case of international cooperation - and not all those involved may be who they seem. All they can do is follow the evidence before their time runs out.

A good thriller, an excellent narrator

I'm writing this only because I notice, to my dismay, that Deaver's new Lincoln Rhyme novel, 'The Midnight Lock', has been announced for November, read not by Jeff Harding but by Edoardo Ballerini. Using the library, I was able to compare Ballerini's version of 'The Burial Hour" with this one by Harding. Jeff Harding is an outstanding reader, one of the very best. His ability to transform his voice (he is among the very few male readers capable of evoking convincingly a woman's voice) and to do different accents, together with his energetic and imaginative reading, greatly enhances the pleasure I find in this series. He accounts for the fifth star I give to many of these books. Ballerini, who has apparently gained in reputation these last years, is markedly poor by comparison. His voice has a muffled quality that puts me to sleep, and he reads with a peculiar inflection that I dislike (George Guidall has a similar tendency but a clearer voice; the worst is Ralph Lister, whom I cannot listen to at all). Tastes vary, of course, but it is unimaginable to me that anybody could want Ballerini after having heard Harding.

I can only hope that even though it has not yet been announced, a Harding version of 'The Midnight Lock' will also be forthcoming. It would be a great shame if it isn't, and it would reflect a serious lapse in judgment on the part of Audible.

A good book with a peculiar end.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't like to sound like an old bore but a more conventional and possibly more believable ending would have been nice.

The basic premis of the book is interesting and it feels like it's going to be a classic Lincoln and Sax romp. A little unfortunately, approximately 3/4 through the book the plot takes a sideways dive and comes off a little unbelievable. It's almost like the writer allowed some excitable child in his family to script the final twist.

What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Just a fantastic narrator. Certainly one of the best on Audible.

Any additional comments?

I know I have said that the ending is a little strange but the book was very enjoyable nevertheless. Certainly worth a read even if you have not read the other books in this series.

It's nice to catch up with the characters, Lincoln's relentless pursuit of alcohol, Sax's endless car fanaticism and Tom's constant mothering. and I particularly enjoyed the new dynamic of taking them outside the US.

Burial hour

Gripping read the first rhyme book I’ve read with the narration being easy to listen to “apart from Amelia’s voice” I found it riveting twists and turns abound and a ending that does justice to the whole. I have recommended this to my family and I will be uploading the series

just okay

I was a little disappointed in the story. All the other have been great. I found it a little flat and boring to be honest.

The perfect composition

A movement within a movement within a movement, the perfect composition, so much intrigue, an excellent story told superbly by Jeff Harding.
The story set mainly in Italy, with some new characters, gives Lincoln Rhyme plenty to think about.

Interesting plot twists

Good read with unexpected plot twists from a respected author set within the traditional Lincoln Rhyme formula.

Saved by Jeff Harding

Massively padded story full of virtually unrelated events and very stilted reported speech. The early Deavers were great books but he seems to have lost it. The book is only saved from total tedium by Jeff Hardings masterly narration.

Disappointed

I love these stories and narrator but this one I have tried over two weeks to complete to no avail. Gets me to sleep though! So I am disappointed and will give up.
