About this listen

From the author of The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School, two best bros fake an engagement–but will their friendship survive?

It’s about time roommates Alejandro and Kenny get married. Or at least, that’s what all their close friends and family think when they announce their engagement. The kicker? The two are faking their whole relationship so Alejandro can get a green card. But if Han was going to marry anyone, it would be his ride or die since second grade.

Han has never been able to put down roots, and the only one who truly breaks through his walls is Kenny. Sweet, sensitive Kenny is newly single, and what better distraction from his soul-sucking relationship than proposing marriage to Han? Kenny can’t think of anything more fun than spending his life with his best friend, even if it’s just for a piece of paper. But as Kenny keeps up the charade, he’s soon struggling to resist their sizzling chemistry.

The line between fact and fiction begins to blur the closer they get to their wedding date. With all eyes on Han and Kenny—including a meddling ex and immigration officers—will these two bros make it down the altar for real?

I went into Sonora Reyes's The Broposal thinking, "Oh, a little fake dating, a little immigration drama, cute, whatever." Reader, I was not prepared for the emotional whiplash this book delivered. Kenny and Han decide to "bro-pose" their way into a green card marriage, and what follows is less a simple rom-com and more a masterclass in how to obliterate your feelings for anyone who isn't these two.
Seriously, if you thought you knew what "friends-to-lovers" meant, think again. Reyes takes it, throws it in a blender with complex trauma, immigration anxiety, and enough pining to fuel a small country, then serves it up with a side of genuinely hilarious banter. I laughed, I cried (specifically, I ugly-cried into my pillow at 3 AM), and I frequently yelled at the characters to just kiss already! The tension between Kenny's journey of healing and Han's quiet desperation is so palpable, it’s practically a third character, silently judging my single status.
This book isn't just good; it's the kind of good that makes you side-eye every other romance novel on your shelf. It’s messy, it’s real, it’s funny, and it’s got more heart than a cardiology convention. If you're looking for a book that will make you believe in true love, friendship, and the sheer audacity of telling your trauma to the internet, then stop reading this review and go read The Broposal. Just bring tissues, and maybe a therapist on standby. You've been warned.
