A well-crafted, beautiful story

I really loved this story. The author finds the 12 year old voice so very well (a thing many writers of adult fiction struggle to do, and probably why another reviewer describes it like an Enid Blyton book - its not like that at all. It's called nailing the child's voice perfectly).

The two different time narratives are handled very well and the characters very rounded. A satisfying ending with a number of surprises.

Highly recommend for readers who enjoy books by Katherine Webb, Rose Tremain and Kate Morton.

Good yet underwhelming

The synopsis and tagline had me thinking this would be a thriller full of intrigue and mystery and suspense. This was a very good story that I believe to have been mis-sold by its own synopsis and tagline.
Sadly it wasn't the mysterious thriller I had been lead to believe which left me disappointed but nevertheless it was still a very decent story.

Wordy

It’s a good story, a little drawn out and wordy. In some parts I felt I was reading a teen story with some of the descriptions; like “my tummy was jiggly and wiggly”
Overall though an enjoyable listen with an ending I didn’t expect, which I prefer to solving the mystery half way through the book.

Enjoyed the story, not the narrator.

The narrator speaks with Received Pronunciation for almost all the characters and seems to struggle differentiating between them.
Also, the pronunciation of “epitome” was incorrect which I found hilarious.

The story (once you ignore the narrator) is good. Keeps you guessing from the start.

Underwhelmed

I good story for the majority of the book - I was underwhelmed by the ending after becoming invested in some of the characters

A bit disjointed

I feel like the story could have worked, but it felt (in places) like it was written in a different time, not simply the 1980s. I didn’t see the ending coming and ended up feeling sorry for a character I least expected, so not a wasted listen.

Also struggled with the narrator and found her delivery quote monotone

Good background story

Got this because it was included - the performance was quite dull and the story was interesting but not as explosive as I was expecting.
Good to have on in the background

Slow start but worth sticking with

I felt echoes of Enid Blighton in some of the flash backs, but the story is good and actually offered a surprise. Nice going, enjoyable read/listen and excellent narration.

Good twist

Family intrigue and jealousy at its best. Told 21 years apart. Great twist ending.
