About this listen

The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.

Washington, D.C., 1950

Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, an all-female boarding house in the heart of the US capital, where secrets hide behind respectable facades.

But when the mysterious Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbours – a poised English beauty, a policeman’s daughter, a frustrated female baseball star, and a rabidly pro-McCarthy typist – into an unlikely friendship.

Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their troubled lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. And when a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?

Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

I've read all of Kate Quinn's books but this has been my favourite. I wasn't sure if there would be too many characters to connect with but the way it was written, each chapter beautifully intertwined the stories of the women living in the house. Also enjoyed the extra bonus of the author discussion at the end. Narration was also excellent. Can't wait for the next one!

I loved it

Brilliant plot, believable characters and excellent narration, made this my favourite Kate Quinn but I’m going to try them all now!

Fantastic character development.

I enjoyed the story, and how so much history was weaved in. The narrator did so well with all the accents. But I felt it dragged on a bit, hence 4/5.

Dragged on, but enjoyable

The Briar Club by Kate Quinn, audiobook narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. Published by HarperCollins listened to using Audible 5 stars.
I loved this book, I have read or listened other books by @kate Quinn particularly the ones from WW1 and after and I have loved them all. They all feature strong women who make difficult and dangerous choices.
In this book a group of young women are living in a boarding house in Washington DC, in the 1950’s. Each one keeping themselves to themselves and it is only when Grace March moves in that things begin to change. Gradually they are drawn to Grace and her Thursday night supper clubs and her window brewed sun tea and real friendships grow, but each of the women have a secret.
Scattered though this story are the many things that happen in American (and World) history, like the paranoia of the McCarthy era, the changing role of women, racism, sexism, classism and domestic violence.
When everything comes to a head the Briar Club women are put test and have to make a tough choice.
This really is an enjoyable title bringing the lives of the women together and their past and how they got to now, through out it all is running history, social history and real historical events. In fact I enjoyed this title so much I went straight back to the beginning and listened to it again. The historical notes at the end of the audiobook are worth listening to, but don’t listen to them before finishing the rest of the book first it contains spoilers.

Fantastic story and a brilliant narrator
