Summary

It is 1920, and DI Albert Lincoln is still reeling from the disturbing events of the previous year. Before the war, he'd investigated the murder of a child in a Cheshire village, and now a woman has been murdered there and another child is missing.

With the help of the village schoolmistress, Albert closes in on the original prewar killer. He soon realises the only witness is in grave danger, possibly from somebody he calls 'the Shadow Man'. And as he discovers more about the victims, he finds information that might bring him a step closer to solving a mystery of his own - the whereabouts of his son.

post WW1 crime story

This is a follow-up to A High Mortality of Doves which was my favourite book by the author. This did not disappoint. Our Inspector Lincoln, still suffering from previous events, must solve the murder of a woman found in another woman's grave, her baby vanished, and no witness except a child. Set just after the First World War when every community and family are grieving.

This ibook kept me interested right up to the end and I particularly enjoyed the back story of our Inspector. Totally different to Kate Ellis' other Wesley Petersen series. Highly recommend this.

Enjoyed it

I enjoyed this book overall but I found it quite hard to get into. There are quite a few characters to keep track of. I am glad I stuck it out, even though I did take a short break and go back to it. On the whole good, I will give another Kate Ellis book a try.

Very enjoyable

A clever story where how we misunderstand one another really matters, especially children. I have listened to the others in this series and I do like a crime in this time period.

Quite enjoying this series

Ghosts alive and dead. Good twisty stuff. I was a bit nervous of a child narrator in parts but I soon stopped noticing.
