About this listen

Georgina Drake—photographer, proud mom, and amateur detective—tackles a case that’s a little too close to home...

Georgina Drake is taking promo photos of a dress rehearsal of Macbeth, and her daughter Bea’s first starring role. But the drama becomes distressingly real when one of the actors, Neil Faulkner, is found stabbed to death. And Georgie is dismayed to see a faint spatter of blood on her daughter’s arm.

Georgie knows Bea isn’t a murderer, but the local police don’t seem inclined to trust her admittedly biased opinion. And when a distraught Bea admits that Neil was blackmailing her, things start to look serious. Undaunted, Georgie decides to prove her daughter’s innocence, even if she has to solve the case herself.

But if Bea isn’t the murderer, then who is? Someone is more than happy to let Bea take their place behind bars, and they aren’t happy about Georgie’s snooping. If she doesn’t tread carefully, she might end up as the next body beneath the stage…

An addictive and completely gripping cozy crime novel. Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Faith Martin and Midsomer Murders.

Narration spot on characters likable and although I don’t normally like ghosts I found it strangely nice found myself smiling at some of the interactions

I really enjoyed this trio

As I don’t wish to spoil the story for anyone I can’t express my irritation with Georgie but her reaction to an event near the end of this novel annoyed me enormously. Additionally I always prefer the law to be subservient to justice and some of the characters who were guilty of, to me, minor offences were handed over to the police for punishment when I would have colluded with them to hide their offences. No surprise that my favourite fictional characters are Reacher and the glorious trio Charlie Parker, Angel and Louis. However the plot and writing were good and I shall continue with this series. I hope her ghost companion Doris or a new ghostly friend features in forthcoming novels, and clever, helpful Bert the spaniel too of course. The narrator Tamsin Kennard does a fine job with all the characters.

Great plot but stupid reaction near the end

I thoroughly enjoy these stories. Two mysteries for the price of one and likeable characters throughout for the most part. Some slightly outdated attitudes to a few people’s past experiences which don’t ring true in 2025, but forgivable among all the other enjoyable bits. Oh, and I would like to see Georgina track down that 1970s GP and find out what he was thinking; giving advice about gin and stairs in 1971! With Victorian attitudes like that, how many other lives did he ruin?? 🙄

Charming, even with Georgina being a murder magnet!
