Story4 out of 5 stars 33
When Detective Nick Fourcade enters the home of Genevieve Gauthier outside the sleepy town of Bayou Breaux, Louisiana, the bloody crime scene that awaits him is both the most brutal and the most confusing he's ever seen. Genevieve's seven-year-old son, P.J., has been murdered by an alleged intruder, yet Genevieve is alive and well, a witness inexplicably left behind to tell the tale. There is no evidence of forced entry, not a clue that points to a motive. Meanwhile, Nick's wife, Detective Annie Broussard, sits in the emergency room with the grieving Genevieve. A mother herself, Annie understands the emotional devastation this woman is going through.

Harry Bosch finds himself yet again in charge of a case that no one else will touch. This time his job is to nail the killer of hot shot black lawyer Howard Elias. Elias has been found murdered on the eve of going to court on behalf of Michael Harris, a man the LAPD believes guilty of the rape and murder of a twelve-year-old girl. Elias had let it be known that the aim of his civil case was not only to reveal the real killer but to target and bring down the racist cops who beat up his client during a violent interrogation.

It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, nonstop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets. Right to the bottom of the shaft. It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different skyscraper. And when Wednesday brings yet another high-rise catastrophe, one of the most vertical cities in the world - and the nation’s capital of media, finance and entertainment - is plunged into chaos.

Summary
#1 New York Times Bestselling author Tami Hoag returns to the bestselling series of her career with a Kovac and Liska case that will delight fans and new listeners alike.
A murder from the past. A murder from the present. And a life that was never meant to be....
As the dreary, bitter weather of late fall descends on Minneapolis, Detective Nikki Liska is restless. After moving to the cold case squad in order to spend more time with her sons, she misses the rush of pulling an all-nighter, the sense of urgency of hunting a murderer on the loose. Most of all she misses her old partner, Sam Kovac. Sam is having an even harder time adjusting to Nikki's absence, saddled with a green new partner younger than pieces of Sam's wardrobe. Sam is distracted from his troubles by an especially brutal double homicide: a middle-aged husband and wife bludgeoned and hacked to death in their home with a ceremonial Japanese samurai sword. Nikki's case, the unsolved murder of a family man, community leader, and decorated sex crimes detective for the Minneapolis PD, is less of a distraction: twenty years later, there is little hope for finding the killer who got away.
On the other end of the spectrum, Minneapolis resident Evi Burke has a life she only dreamed of as a kid in and out of foster homes: a beautiful home, a family, people who love her, a fulfilling job. Little does she know that a danger from her past is stalking her perfect present. A danger powerful enough to pull in both Kovac and Liska and destroy the perfect life she was never meant to have.

Gritty US Police drama
High literature it isn't but solid writing and a page turner. Gritty precinct police drama with interesting characters and no 'super hero cop', just these hardened detectives doing their jobs.
Think Ed Mcbain, think NYPD Blue (if your memory stretches back that far).
This is my second Hoag book and I will certainly look out for more when seeking this genre.

Another Tami Hoag Problem Novel
Darn, darn, darn. I am a long time fan of Tami Hoag suspense novels, especially the Kovac and Linska series. Two books back I ended up disappointed with her last Kovac and Linska novel that was also a problem novel about bullying. This one is about sex abuse and consequences. It's not bad, it's just kind of mediocre. The spark that made her earlier books must reads is no longer there, at least for me.
The narrator wasn't particularly interesting either. He's done better in the past, although he is not one of favorites.
I'm very disappointed.

This story feels rushed, and the coincidences are way to far fetched. Trying to tie Liska and Kovach together like this didn't work for me. I like the new partner. Maybe he needs his own series of books?

Not My Favourite, But OK.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend other books in the Kovac and Liska series (Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust, Prior Bad Acts, and The Ninth Girl) by Tami Hoag, or, her Oak Knoll series (Deeper than the Dead, Secrets to the Grave, and Down the Darkest Road), which I liked much better.
So, no, I wouldn't really recommend this book, but certainly others by this author.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was fine. Satisfactory. Made sense. But I did see it coming.
Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't think I've listened to Colacci before, but he did a really wonderful job narrating the story. He had a good tone, and distinguished the characters really well.
Could you see The Bitter Season being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I can see the Kovac and Liska books (starting with Ashes to Ashes, then Dust to Dust, etc) being made into a TV series. There is good chemistry between the partners and usually good story lines.
Any additional comments?
This book was an ok installment of the series. An acceptable police procedural, but not my favourite by this author.
I just didn't find the story line or the characters or the crimes compelling .

Bitter Season Indeed
This book was very good even though there was a lot of violence. It kept me guessing to the end. However, a word of caution: Anyone with a history of childhood psychological/emotional, physical, &/or sexual abuse as children should proceed with care. This story can bring back many unpleasant through horrific memories. If you're prone to dissociation, you may dissociate during reading or listening to this book. Childhood abuse is a theme in many books, tv shows, & movies. It is challenging enough to deal with one's own experiences, much less having memories flooding back. If you have not had life-altering abuse, you might learn a lot from this book. Outcomes are not generally homicidal, but pay attention to the characters feelings because they ring very true.

Not my favorite
Well, we all know that narration makes or breaks a book. Not wild about the narrator but listened anyway. Story was decent, not overwhelming. I keep forgetting to listen to the sample but will try to remember in the future. Still enjoy the books by Tami Hoag but prefer a female narrator on her books. I have plenty of male favorites but don't think I'm supposed to go there.

Complex
Enjoyed the complexity of the story,. It wad not my favorite
because the subject matter was very dark. Excellent narration. This will not be my last Tammi Hoag..
