Summary

Through one incredible woman's journey from a child bride in a small Zimbabwe village to one of the world's most recognizable voices in women's empowerment and education, this manifesto inspires women to pursue their sacred dreams through nine essential lessons brought forth from ancient African wisdom.

Before Tererai Trent landed on Oprah's stage as her "favorite guest of all time", she was a woman with a forgotten dream. As a young girl in a cattle-herding village in Zimbabwe, she dreamed of receiving an education but instead was married young and by 18, without a high school graduation, she was already a mother of three. Tererai encountered a visiting American woman who assured her that anything was possible, reawakening her sacred dream. Tererai planted her dreams deep in the earth and prayed they would grow. They did, and now not only has she earned her PhD, but she has also built schools for girls in Zimbabwe, with funding from Oprah. The Awakened Woman: Remembering & Reigniting Our Sacred Dreams is her accessible, intimate, and evocative guide that teaches nine essential lessons to encourage all women to reexamine their dreams and uncover the power hidden within them - power that can re-create our world for the better.

Tererai points out that there is a massive, untapped global resource in women who have, for one reason or another, set aside their wisdom, their skills, and their dreams in order to take care of the personal business of their lives. Not only is this a type of invisible suffering experienced by countless women, this rich resource is a secret weapon for improving our world. Women have the capacity to inspire, to create, to transform - and Tererai's call to action will awaken hearts, give permission to recapture dreams, and provide the tools to forge a brighter path for all. This is the movement of Sacred Sisters.

The elements in this story are clear and fluid

Please be aware that this book holds some very harrowing experiences from Terrarai's life. I found many of them very upsetting. It is her story and that makes it all meaningful. I understand clearly how she wants to guide us to find our sacred truth but terrifying me hasn't helped me find mine. This story and the way she wants to help is honourable and will guide so many people but I found it very difficult to listen to in places.

wonderful minus the tangents

I loved it though I struggled with the tangents she goes on sometimes and she narrated to slowly for me (had to speed it up). When she gets into her life story is when it really shines and is essential reading for people who dream to make the world a better place.

Amazing story of courage and perseverance!

This is a terrific, motivating memoir, told beautifully by the author. Tererai Trent tells her story in a way that weaves her familial and cultural heritage into her practical message. She is a true inspiration. When I question my ability to succeed at some endeavor, I will remember Tererai.

I love this book and also Dr. Terari's Genuineness

This book has been a real blessing to my spirit. I have recommended it with several of my colleagues, students and mentees. It shows that we all came from somewhere and how it can serve to strengthen us on our journey on this planet. I wish more people remembered where they came from and their obligation to return and uplift others. It has motivated me to do more to give back to my community of origin.

Women Support Eachother’s Success

Such an inspiring story and guidebook to develop our own dreams and life purpose. My favorite quote from this is “You can infinitely be reborn.” Tererai goes on to say that we are never too old or too poor or too downtrodden to realize our life’s purpose. Her story is inspiring and hopeful especially in these challenging times.

Extremely inspiring

I have never heard of this author. I was reading a magazine and her book was on the recommended list of just read books. Dr. Tererai Trent is such an inspiration and has accomplished so much. She went from being a cattle herder in Zimbabwe to a doctor. It begs the question, what are you doing with your life?
