About this listen
A newly edited, single-volume commemorative edition of The Path to Power and The Downing Street Years; this is Margaret Thatcher in her own words.
READ BY MARGARET THATCHER. Combining her memoirs ‘The Path to Power’ and ‘The Downing Street Years’, this definitive account of Margaret Thatcher’s life is published as a one volume commemorative edition for the first time.
Margaret Thatcher was the towering figure of late-twentieth-century British politics. Now following her death in 2013, this is the story of her remarkable life, in her own words.
Beginning with her upbringing in Grantham, she goes on to describe her entry into Parliament. Rising through the ranks of this man’s world, she led the Conservative Party to victory in 1979, becoming Britain's first woman prime minister.
Offering a riveting first-hand account of the critical moments of her premiership – the Falklands War, the miners' strike, the Brighton bomb and her unprecedented three election victories, the book reaches a gripping climax with an hour-by-hour description of her dramatic final days in 10 Downing Street.
Margaret Thatcher's frank and compelling autobiography stands as a powerful testament to her influential legacy.
Critic reviews
Tributes to Margaret Thatcher:
‘She fought against the clubby, cosy, male-dominated consensus of both main parties – and she won.’ Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
‘She will be remembered as a unique figure. She reshaped the politics of a whole generation. She was Britain's first woman prime minister. She moved the centre ground of British politics and was a huge figure on the world stage.’ Ed Miliband, Leader of the Labour Party
‘The world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend. She stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can't be shattered. She helped restore the confidence and pride that has always been the hallmark of Britain at its best.’ Barack Obama, President of the United States of America
However, after listening to her account, narrated with such passion by Maggie herself, I now feel a sense of humility, loss and sorrow.
What a Lady..!
If only UK politics could turn to someone with such belief and conviction for doing what’s right in the long term for our nation right now.
But then again such people seem driven away from public life these days.
Wonderful book, amazing woman - never thought I’d be saying that back in the 1980’s...!!!
Stunning

If you could sum up The Autobiography in three words, what would they be?
You don't need to be a fan to appreciate her undeniable commitment to her beliefs (no U turns here). A greengrocers daughter elevated to the heady heights of government through her own efforts alone. Truly unique and inspirational....a great book. A great story. And with Lady Thatcher as narrator, it adds a touch of authenticity....What was one of the most memorable moments of The Autobiography?
The whole story was interesting. However, the path from school to the House of Commons was quite incredible, given a variety of reasons (including being female). Reliant on affiliations and associations with other members, though she never bartered to achieve success.Which character – as performed by Margaret Thatcher – was your favourite?
Herself. The fact that she narrates this book made it for me. Literally 'from the horses mouth'. She provides the speed and tone as she intended it.Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Certainly. Almost a shame my journeys to work were so short.Insightful, Genuine, Unique and Inspirational....
