About this listen

Heather Forest, a twenty-year veteran professional storyteller, says,"I became a storyteller as a direct extension of singing old folk ballads which contained tales." Early in her career, she began to creat contemporary versions of traditional folktales from around the world. Forest created The Animals Could Talk for family audieinces - "This [collection] has many levels, from simple plot to catchy melodies, to underlying political commentary. It can be enjoyed by adults and children together." Among the 19 Aesop's Fables included are - "The Ox and the Frog," "The Oak and the Bramble," "A Father, a Son, and a Donkey," "Look Before You Leap," "A Bundle of Sticks," and "Beautiful as You Are."©1994 Heather Forest (P)1994 August House Publishers, Inc. Editor reviews

Aesop’s tales involve personified animals and inanimate objects, and have simple stories and easy lessons that anyone - particularly kids - can relate to. They’re fun and engaging short stories that have survived across centuries. Equipped with an acoustic guitar and an affinity for poppy vocal harmony, Heather Forest puts her own spin on a selection of the fables. She lends her folk stylings to such well-known tales as "Sour Grapes" and "A Father, a Son, and a Donkey", weaving melodies and stories with an upbeat toe-tapping quality that falls somewhere between Peter, Paul, and Mary and Raffi. Kids and parents will want to enjoy this musical audiobook together.

Critic reviews

Heather Forest knows that the strength of a soft, gentle moral can have greater impact than one that trumpets its truth with thunder and fury. ( Milwaukee Journal)
