Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

Martin Seligman, considered the father of positive psychology, has likened resilience to clearing the weeds from a rose garden, which can reach its potential only if the weeds are kept in check. Americans are busier, more stressed, and more anxious and depressed than they were during the Great Depression.

Common-sense wrapped in arcane ideas and language
- By Daniel on 02-03-16
Summary
Did you know that achievement can be learned? As Bernie Roth explains, achievement is a muscle. And once you learn how to flex it, you'll be able to meet life's challenges and reach your goals.
Based on a legendary course Roth has taught at Stanford University for several decades, The Achievement Habit employs the remarkable insights that stem from design thinking to help us realize the power we all have within to change our lives for the better. By ridding ourselves of issues that stand in the way of reaching our full potential, we gain the confidence finally to do things we've always wanted to do. Combining design thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication skills, and life adjustments, listeners will learn:
- Why trying and doing are two different things
- Why using reasons (excuses), even legitimate ones, to explain one's behavior is self-defeating
- How to change your self-image into one of a doer and achiever
- How subtle language changes can resolve existential dilemmas and barriers to action
- How to build resiliency by reinforcing what you do rather than what you accomplish
- How to be open to learning from your own experience and from those around you
Our behavior and relationships can be transformed - if we choose to, we can be mindful and control our intentions to create habits that make our lives better. And with this thoughtful book as your guide, you can.

Makes a lot of assumptions that I couldn't agree with.
A couple of things happened when I was reading this book. First was that I found myself getting rather animated when I disagreed with the author about 'reasons'. Second, the penny dropped that this is how Neurotypical people think and operate. Further, they assume that all people can (and should) think and operate the same way. As a person who cannot think and operate like this, I found this book to be an incredible insight into how intelligent mainstream people operate and assume others should too.
Another thing that happened is that I have stopped giving 'reasons' when I say no to things. It is far better to just say no (although I maintain that reasons and excuses are not the same thing) I feel I have saved myself time and energy, and perhaps even increased my credibility with this small change.
Having made myself push on despite my irritation, I am very glad I committed to finishing this book. For all the areas I agreed with the author, I have another way of communicating my thoughts now. For all the times I didn't agree, I have a better understanding of the other side of the argument.

Good book, full of life lessons
I'd need to listen again to start taking action though and it reads more like a memoir than a how to. I still really liked it and there are a lot of common sense tips in the book.
I loved the voice of the guy who reads it, though I was disappointed that it wasn't the author.
The only downside is that the sound quality is not good. I listen to a lot of books on my cycle into work along a busy road (on a cycle highways, so it's safe!) and I found this book quiet in places.

I should have known better...
Any additional comments?
As old as I am, I still sometimes fail to listen to that small voice in my head that screams, "Don't Do It!!!" This was just such a case. I read the reviews for Dr. Roth's book. They were generally positive and some were even enthusiastic. But I came across one well-written review (and I am sorry that I don't have his name to give you as a reference) that really caught my eye. It was spot on. And like the stubborn person I am, I bought Dr. Roth's book anyway. And...I regret it!
I can save you a lot of time by giving you the two major themes of the book...
1. "Doing something is better than not doing something."
2. "I love my platitudes and bumper sticker folksy adages, so here are 12 chapters full of them"
The book fails to meet the lofty expectations generated by that great title. In fact, this book fails to meet any expectations at all. It is a series of random stores and anecdotes. It is Dr. Roth's "I love me...you will too" recitation of many experiences he has had and his observations on life based on his interaction with college students spanning 50 years. Wonderful! This is your life, Dr. Roth! Hardly a roadmap to developing "The Achievement Habit".
As I said, I sometimes don't remember to follow my own instincts. This book was just a series of platitudes so I'll give you one I learned a long time ago that's truly applicable here:
"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach". I should have remembered this one...

I wish I'd paid attention to the reviews
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone; the ideas in "The Achievement Habit" are poorly organized and even more poorly expressed. I had a hard time listening to the material for more than fifteen minutes at a time, owing to the author's condescending and self-satisfied tone.
What could Bernard Roth have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Tone down his self-regard. I get it, you're a big deal, you make the point of mentioning Stanford and your experiences at least once-per-page. But does every story have to be you putting someone in their place (even if the person being corrected is you, it's always via self-correction. Don't you have anything to learn from anyone else?)
As the other reviewers have noted, the book could have delivered the same material without the, often loosely associated, anecdotes. This may be useful information for someone without much life or work experience, but not for someone who has been through lots of previous self-reflection and growth.
Have you listened to any of Sean Pratt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
n/a
Do you think The Achievement Habit needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, please
Any additional comments?
Mr Roth strikes me as one of those persons who's ideas were so influential that they've now become part of the fabric of our times. And he seems to be at that stage where he's not breaking any new ground but isn't ready to cede authority to anyone else.

Touchy feely mixed with a few solid suggestions.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Basically its focus. Remove the unhelpful autobiography and sentiment. focus on practical advice.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Basically actually deliver useful information promised in the title.
What about Sean Pratt’s performance did you like?
He has a pleasant voice and excellent modulation.
Did The Achievement Habit inspire you to do anything?
Yes, avoid the writings of Mr. Roth and consider other titles read by Mr. Pratt.
Any additional comments?

Collection of tools (not a method)
I wish the book had a single storyline and gave a holistic method. Instead it presents lots of different methods for various circumstances. It's difficult to remember them and apply as necessary.
It is still a good one, but much more disappointing than what I've expected.

The tone is too condescending.
I was really interesting in reading about design thinking, and this book was recommended to me by a design thinking teacher. Maybe I should have read a little more about it before buying it, but it is not really about design thinking, it's about changing your life from the perspective of someone who knows about design thinking. The overall tone, and narration are very condescending. The feeling you get from the writing style is, you are stupid, so you make stupid mistakes, I'm an expert, so let me tell you how to change. I was disappointed.

Great book to get you off your butt!
I wish books like this were required reading for college students. Roth is a talented instructor and although not everyone is fortune to have teachers like him all the time he can give you the nudge to realize you are in control, to realize what you can really do and walk around that lamp post.
