Austin has given us a clear and helpful guide to parenting a child with ADHD. I found myself thinking, as I listened to Austin's advice on how to treat your child, that there are many ways in which parenting a child with ADHD requires the same basic skills and plans for parenting that any child needs - a sense of safety that they are cared for and that their parents will be there for them; boundaries to know what behaviors are acceptable, stable routines that don't change much, help to know how to make friends and how to treat other people. While the ADHD child may take longer to understand and learn these skills, they can learn and all of this points to the fact that the parent of an ADHD child will need to be persistent and focused on helping their child master behaviors and make good choices. While children without ADHD may grasp concepts in an easier way, it was encouraging to me to hear that the ADHD child can learn and can be successful daily and grow into successful adults. Another important point of Austin's book is that parents need support from other parents of ADHD children as well and that there are many published aids and tools to parenting on the market. This book is a great way to understand your child and move forward. I highly recommend it.
