Story
The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.

This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Richard Nixon opens with young navy lieutenant "Nick" Nixon returning from the Pacific and setting his cap at Congress, an idealistic dreamer seeking to build a better world. Yet amid the turns of that now legendary 1946 campaign, Nixon's finer attributes quickly gave way to unapologetic ruthlessness. It is a stunning overture to John A. Farrell's magisterial portrait of a man who embodied postwar American cynicism.

Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

Story
As an unmarried heretic with no heir, Elizabeth I was regarded with horror by Catholic Europe, while her Stuart successors, James I and Charles I, were seen as impecunious and incompetent. The traumatic civil wars, regicide and a republican Commonwealth were followed by the floundering foreign-leaning rule of Charles II and his brother, James II, before William of Orange invaded England with a Dutch army and a new order was imposed.
Summary
In this monumental multiple biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin studies Abraham Lincoln's mastery of men. She shows how he saved Civil War-torn America by appointing his fiercest rivals to key cabinet positions, making them help achieve his vision for peace. As well as a thrilling piece of narrative history, it's an inspiring study of one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen. A book to bury yourself in.

Narration that transports the listener.
Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deep dive into Abraham Lincolns life. By contrasting and comparing Lincolns life to his contemporaries, we are given a far more colourful and multifaceted understanding of his motivations, characteristics, socioeconomic, and religious drivers. A very lengthy exposition, but definitely worth it. The narration by Suzanne Torren in a New England accent is a tour de force; it simply transports the reader. Fantastic!

Truly amazing and should be compulsory listening
I have been frustrated by the lack of an audio version of this book for a long time. I was so keen to hear it that I emailed the author and publisher and was extremely excited when it landed on Audible.
Having just finished it I can honestly say that it exceeded my wildest expectations. It is fascinating, inspiring, moving and sometimes even funny.
It is, essentially, a biography of Lincoln but it is so much more. Anyone who leads people or faces challenges should listen or read this. Obama cites it as one of his inspirations and I really understand why.
Listen, learn, laugh and cry. You will be glad you did.

Spectacular and mind blowing
An epic and unbelievably detailed, yet thoroughly enthralling journey through a critical period of history, not just for the U.S. but for the entire world.
Before listening I knew little of the Civil War, nor of Lincoln and was left in awe of his essential goodness. It does not seem that many of his peers were able to match his talents, morality and humility; but he towers in greatness over today’s leaders.
Despite its length the book is engaging throughout and the narration is exemplary. To the point I would say it is probably the best reading of an audio book all round.
Read/listen to it for enjoyment, for historical context and education, but most importantly to learn and in turn practice the right way to think, to treat people and carry yourself in the world.

Superb
This is a meticulously researched, extraordinarily detailed and captivating biography of Lincoln and the most prominent members of his cabinet, and their loved ones. If you enjoy the drama of history then this book is a pleasure to listen to, with anecdotes and vignettes used with great dexterity to break up the weightier sections of the story. It's a remarkable piece of work, and all the vibrancy, character and colour of the period is vividly captured in a lively text that is never dull. The reading is, almost, perfect - a warm, elegant narrative tone that becomes animated and expressive when reading quotations, “in character”. This is a long listen, so it must have been a very long series of recordings, but the consistency in the delivery is really admirable. My only small quibble is with the odd (to my ears) pronunciation of some familiar words (that reappear several times, so not a one-off mistake). There were more than I can remember now, but a few stick in my mind: acumen = ah-K’YOO-men, short-lived = short-LIE-ved, Herculean = huh-K’YOO-lian. However, I can’t say that these oddities spoiled the book especially. In fact, they often made me smile. Highly recommended.
