Unbelievably Bad
I had to double check that this was actually written by an adult, and was shocked to find that he's apparently *best selling* for a previous thriller. Judging by how poorly written this book is, I'll not be reading anything else by Simon Kernick. This book reads as if it were written in a rush and never passed by an editor of any sort. The narrative is implausible and the characters one-dimensional and unrealistic. The basic premise that a policewoman is running her own investigation without any other officer being aware or involved in it and that she is putting a civilian in dangerous situations as she pursues the villian is supposed to be *edgy* and perhaps *transgressive*. It isn't: it's just unrealistic. Poor plotting is dealt with by having multiple viewpoints -- some in first person, others in third. The dialogue is cliche-ridden and peppered with unnecessary rude language. Ditto for descriptions of violence, scenes of which almost feel gratiuitous at times. (I'm not a prude and don't mind strong language when the context demands, but this is just there for the sake of it or because it's lazy writing.) Critical details are skimmed over (often with the phrase "somehow [whatever it is] happened". Irrelevant details of back stories are dropped in at the most unlikely times, often at points of high pressure when reflection on the past is hardly what the character is thinking about. Baddies defy the laws of physics and time; heroes can jump over hedges and walls in one leap and despite feeling the breath of their pursurer on their neck, can outrun them. If this was the work of a 14 year old, I'd applaud it. But it isn't, and I've returned it as a complete waste of time.

Target by Simon Kernick
Absolutely outstanding - a riveting listen - a high octane crime story with breathtaking twists and turns. One of the best of the 40 or so audio books of this genre that I have listened to whilst out walking or driving over the last 12 months. Mike Bolt and Tina Boyd at their very best. Also brilliantly read. I will definitely buy more by this author.

A little confusing at times
Overall, this was a great story. There were a couple of confusing/sketchy escapes by the main Villain that didn’t sit well with me.
My main issue was with one of the main characters. He was narrated in the first person. It was I said this and I did that etc. It was like the story was being told from his point of view. He was then killed. This really didn’t sit well with me. It didn’t make sense. It threw the whole story.
Having said that, I have never had a best seller or had a book published. I am not even a writer so, what do I know.

compelling but too many gratuitous deaths
It starts with a very disturbing murder and I almost finished there and then but the performance kept me going. it improved considerably and I grew very fond of the leading characters, the onesbon the right side of the law. The story remained compelling throughout but was also terribly sad in places and I still have a feeling of remorse for some characters and pity for others. I have now ordered some more books from this author and will continue with him for some time.
