Summary

Only a few short months after humanity's first interstellar flights, the first shots have been fired in what will eventually become known as the Alliance Wars.

Terran Fleet Command teeters on the edge of chaos in the aftermath of Chairwoman Crull's removal from power, while in space, Earth's defense falls squarely on the shoulders of Admiral Kevin Patterson. With only a small number of ships capable of bringing the fight to the enemy, he makes the bold decision to divide his forces, meeting the Resistance task force head-on at two separate locations.

Captain Tom Prescott and crew aboard the destroyer Theseus meet with initial success on the battlefield, only to be faced with the arrival of a warship completely out of her class - armed with weapons for which she is not prepared.

As the Resistance task force makes its final approach to Earth, a new ally warns of the horrors that will be visited on our homeworld if the coming attack succeeds. In the meantime, the enigmatic Guardian watches and waits, noncommittal as to its role as a protector or a mere observer.

Yet hope remains - as a friend of humanity finally comes to grips with his destiny.

I love this series and can't wait for book 4. Great story from both sides of the conflict. The narrator did a fantastic job. Would definitely buy more from this author so Audible please produce quickly after book 4 is complete!!!

A perfect book for napping!

I was surprised that a very large portion of this book is dedicated to explaining what is going on in the book. In fact, it struck me a book that contains another book that describes the first book. Now, this may seem odd but, it also seems to anticipate that people will nod off to sleep when listening to the book. If they do, it is a very clever technique because it helps ensure that the listener will not have to worry about missing anything because it will all be explained again shortly.

Another feature that makes this book perfect to listen to when you may fall asleep is the plot development. It is so painfully slow throughout the series that, even if you fall asleep and miss some detail, it won’t matter because the plot never advances far enough in an hour or two to leave you behind.

Of course, there are the parts of the novels that are dedicated to describing various scenes in great detail. It is almost as if the author is describing what is happening in a movie to a blind person. This too has a soothing effect that trended to encourage me to just close my eyes and listen. What better encourages peaceful napping than that?

Then again, there are the characters. They are all unambiguous and one dimensional to the point where they are all nearly interchangeable. The good guys are all the honorable boy scout types and the baddies act within the confines of their own roles. So, when you fall asleep, it wont matter who is talking when you wake back up.

Then, there is the narration. It seemed to me that the narrator was fully aware of how tediously slow the story progresses and tried his best to compensate by reading the parts just as fast as he could to hold people’s interest in spite of the foregoing. Sadly, this really does not help people who find the need to take naps during the story. However, I was able to fix this by slowing down the playback to 90% of normal. Problem solved!

Now despite all this, I can say that I listened to the first three books in their entirety and the pause between deciding to spend a credit on more of the same was not overly long. But, perhaps I got carried away in those instances. However, before getting the last book in the series, I think it appropriate to sleep on the decision.

amazing , I hope there is another !

So far the author has demonstrated an uncanning ability to entice the reader. Hopefully the story doesn't end here.

The Resistance task force is coming

So the Resistance task force makes its final approach to Earth, and Admiral Patterson has to ready earth's defenses for them. But will the Guardian be a help or hindrance? I am loving listen to this series.

Flat, Thin, and lacks a dynamic heart

Ok, I am almost to the end of the third book now and I likely will not continue with the next one.

Why you ask?

This series could easily be condensed into maybe two books? There is so much “Military” filler and very little story for the money.

The reader although not as bad as many, has a very narrow dynamic character range. He also, (this is also the producer’s fault), miss-pronounces many words and sometimes with catastrophic results.

Example: I live in Japan so I know – the name is pronounced “Oh he row” (roll the r into a slight “l” as you say it but NOT “Oh hear oh” – Please! Do a bit of research before you decide on how to say words - especially when they are foreign words.

Example: It’s pronounced “Par-leigh” not “Parlee”

And the name of the main ship in the series is “Thesis” – means approximately “from / of god” but when you slip and say it “Fecius” – well that just a “s**t*” mistake. Slow down and edit producers!

Unfortunately I must agree with other reviewers that the storyline is very shallow. The exploration of social space issues is thin and not well developed – or not deep enough that I want to care enough? And as others have said, this story moves SO SLOW!

The reader, again not totally bad, but along with the weak storyline filled with all this military conversation at the cost of other more compelling potiential, gives the work what I would say is minimal on “heart”. I’m not compelled to care about the characters very much and I am tired with all the over explained (over and over again) military tech.

Lastly, I don’t review “all” the books I read but this series, I feel I have an obligation to warn people about what they are getting into. Some like this kind of thing, but this type of writing and presentation is not a compelling listen for me.
