About this listen

From the author of The New York Times best-selling novels The Handmaid’s Tale - now an Emmy Award-winning Hulu original series - and Alias Grace, now a Netflix original series.

Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a talented woman artist who goes in search of her missing father on a remote island in northern Quebec. Setting out with her lover and another young couple, she soon finds herself captivated by the isolated setting, where a marriage begins to fall apart, violence and death lurk just beneath the surface, and sex becomes a catalyst for conflict and dangerous choices.

Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose. Here is a rich mine of ideas from an extraordinary writer about contemporary life and nature, families and marriage, and about women fragmented...and becoming whole.

Really enjoyed this, especially towards the end. Ends in typical Atwood style, leaving you guessing! Narrator is very good too.

Either it is a genius book, or very bad one 😄 Nothing happens, A lot of thinking, I don't know. Maby I am just too simple minded to understand it 😜

I didn't understand anything 😂

I’ve read many of Atwood’s novels and loved all of them. This may be the most “plotless” (as one reviewer called it) but I enjoyed that. Atwood takes you deep into the Canadian landscape, her descriptions fauna, lake, swamp, and forests make me feel I have been there.

The main character’s self discovery and what “surfaces” midway through the novel is beautifully executed.

My second time reading and I may read again!

Atwood always delights
