About this listen

Two teenagers fight for their place in a world where everybody has powers—and the fate of humanity may be in their hands—in this original superhero series.

On July 6, 1963, human history was forever altered. From the depths of space, a golden wave of light bathed everyone on Earth in rays that rendered them unconscious. Six days later, five billion people awakened with superpowers. For thirty-seven years now, superhumanity has managed to keep the peace. With some exceptions . . .

Matt Callaghan is a clairvoyant. Unfortunately, his uncanny talent for predicting the future has more to do with observation and psychology (read: lying) than actual superpowers. About to graduate from Northridge High, he still hasn’t developed any special abilities. And if the authorities discover the truth, Matt can safely predict he’ll be locked up as a scientific curiosity.

Jane Walker is an Empath, feared and hated for her ability to assume other people’s powers by touching them. Expelled from various high schools for fighting bullies with a dazzling array of formidable abilities of their own, she’s determined to prove her worth and join the legendary Legion of Heroes.

Tasked with employing his “clairvoyance” to monitor his new classmate, Matt must juggle protecting his secret inability and keeping Jane and his friends from killing each other. And when the Legion of Heroes offers Matt a place in their academy, his attempt to play off the organization’s history backfires into Jane getting accepted as well.

As Matt bluffs his way through evaluation and Jane battles for her very life, the pair will soon learn the Legion’s true agenda is far from altruistic—and even farther from heroic...

This is an exciting new writer with great world building skills. This fresh look at the superhero genre takes has great characters and moves along at a cracking pace. The plot twists work well and it’s thoroughly entertaining with plenty of action and humour and is at times genuinely touching. It’s well narrated (though occasionally a bit too strident). Highly recommended and an author to watch. I’ve left the same review for book 2 as they are both that good.

Well worth the time and money

The premise is fun, it can be a little predictable, but the narration is good and the story had me laughing which is what I needed. A fun start to a series I've just bought the second part to.

A good fun superhero story

Definitely a YA novel but that’s not a bad thing, refreshing not having swearing every few seconds just a little odd the first time, when it’s mentions swearing, and nothing happens. Good story. Well narrated and some funny bloopers at the end.

Definitely a YA

tl;dr, a fairly fun YA story with an interesting twist and darker undertones that falls flat in places with its world building logic and horrendously stupid plot points.

I like how the usual super powered kid trying to fit in around normal people story gets flipped on its head with a normal kid trying to fake being a super around other supers, but the moment you start asking questions of the plot things kinda get wonkey.
The largest of these plot points that had me face palming hard is that half a billion people get wiped out by a villain. This results in the entire world persecuting all people with the same ability that people are born with completely randomly, requiring by law that all people with this power including children (like the MCs friend) having their faces tattooed with a star of David analog... Why?
Persecuting and attacking people with the potential to wipe out hundreds of millions in a single blast for the crime of being born with said power, what could go wrong?... the whole setup was so blindingly stupid I couldn't help but start picking at the holes in the plot rather than just enjoying the story.

A good book if you turn your brain off.
