Summary

Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy.

Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

Why doesn’t God do something about suffering? He has, He did, He is, and He will.

Suffering and love are inexplicably linked, as God’s love for His people is evidenced in His sending Jesus to carry our sins, griefs, and sufferings on the cross, sacrificially taking what was not His on Himself so that we would not be required to carry it. He has walked the ultimate path of suffering, and He has won victory on our behalf.

This truth led Elisabeth to say, “Whatever is in the cup that God is offering to me, whether it be pain and sorrow and suffering and grief along with the many more joys, I’m willing to take it because I trust Him.”

Because suffering is never for nothing.

Very helpful book on suffering

I appreciated the honest, compassionate and direct way in which Elisabeth deals with the challenging topic of suffering. Using personal experiences and sound biblical wisdom, she presents a Christ-centred perspective on suffering. She does not offer easy answers or ‘preachy’ advice, but deals with gritty realities and starts with the attitudes of our hearts towards the minor and major problems in life. It was read well by Pam and you could imagine Elisabeth saying it that way.

inspiring. real.

Elisabeth Elliott was an amazing woman. I was so surprised at her humility and transparency. she gives me hope. there is a purpose in our pain. while I know the narrator is an award winner, I did not care for her voice at all. took quite awhile to get used to it enough to focus solely on the content.

So Encouraging

This book was such a blessing! It felt like you were sitting in the audience with her. Elisabeth Elliot went through so much yet she truly had the right perspective in life that it was all nothing compared with the glory which shall be revealed. If you are in the midst of any type of suffering or season of discouragement, I highly recommend this book. I listened to it on the way to and from work and it was such an encouragement to me!

Suffering is never for nothing

Wisdom from Mrs. Elliott about the purpose and ways God uses suffering to make us more like Christ. A treasure from a life well lived and full of some of the most terrible suffering I could imagine and yet, the humility and confidence in our Lord shines brighter than the suffering itself. I am thankful to have been able to partake of these teachings as they were blessings to me.

Best Real Truthful

The best book about the reason of WHY we suffer. God's perspective in it all. If you have ever wondered why would a good God allow us to suffer? This is the book for you.

On the must read again and again pile

Eliot is one of my favorite authors. God has given her an ability to communicate truth in a way it can be remembered and applied. Suffering is Never for Nothing shares how we can view suffering through God's eyes not just how God showed her how her suffering was used.

relationship between suffering and the love of God

this is a great reminder of God's love for His children even as we suffer, we trust God & believe so our perspective changes & we learn to surrender our suffering back to God as an offering wow! very refreshing read.

One of the BEST books on suffering!!

Elisabeth Elliott is easily my top favorite author. She credibly speaks from experience and ultimately her books bring encouragement and truth because they are wholly based on God’s word! So thankful this collection of writings was released! The narrator sounds like Elisabeth Elliott would have sounded to me, she is older and has a traditional-sounding voice. I was very pleased!!
