About this listen

“Edinburgh comes alive: its cobbled street and dank and damp alleyways form the backdrop to a story which abounds with intrigue, political mayhem and clandestine skullduggery.” Jaffareadstoo

Edinburgh, January 1744: Scotland stands on the brink of armed and bloody conflict. Travelling secretly across Europe from Rome, Prince Charles Edward Stuart is determined to claim his birthright. His fervour is matched by homegrown Jacobites who long to see the House of Stuart restored to the British throne.

Redcoat Captain Robert Catto has painful personal reasons for thinking all Jacobites are dreamers and fools. The last thing he expected was to find himself falling in love with one. The last thing he wanted was to realize how much he cares.

Not only about surgeon-apothecary’s daughter Christian Rankeillor but about Scotland too: and the three young people now under his and her protection.

Closer to home, malicious enemies lurk in the shadows. Can Robert and Kirsty dare to hope they might have a future together?

Storm Tossed Moon is the third in a quartet of Jacobite novels by Scottish novelist and historian Maggie Craig, author of the ground-breaking and acclaimed Damn’ Rebel Bitches: The Women of the ’45.

Maggie Craig continues her beloved Storm Over Scotland series with the long awaited #3 Storm Tossed Moon. It’s difficult to write a review of this intriguing book without spoilers as the books definitely need to be read in order to enjoy the full immersive experience of this terrific series. Talented storyteller and respected historian, Ms. Craig cannot go wrong in my opinion. I can name only a handful of authors whose books I await with as much anticipation as I do for hers.

Storm over Scotland is primarily a romance, but, with the author’s extensive knowledge and in-depth understanding of the politics surrounding this period in Scotland’s history, the story is simply fascinating. So much so that her characters, both factual and fictional, are so expertly woven into the story that the seams between the real and the imaginary simply do not show. You actually believe that Robert Catto might suddenly appear, coat tails flying, boot heels clicking on Edinburgh’s cobble, or perhaps Kirsty Rankieller will come hurrying around the corner of Infirmary Street, a basket of physic over her arm.

Such is Maggie Craig’s talent with her pen that she has the most extraordinary ability to create a real sense of time and place, where her readers feel they are actually experiencing the events and feeling the emotions of the characters. In fact, she was responsible for a recent trip I took to Edinburgh. After reading the ebook version of Storm over Scotland, I just had to take my granddaughter on a three-day visit to Ms. Craig’s Edinburgh.

Both Kirsty and Robert are truly convinced of their own truth in the protection of Scotland and her citizens but, despite their differences, the love story between them develops from initial dislike to a deep and abiding love over the course of just a few turbulent and eventful weeks. It’s hard to believe the actual time scale is so short given how authentically and convincingly is the development of the relationship between them.

However, Ms. Craig, always the realist, does a fine job in portraying Robert Catto. Gorgeous though he may well be to look at, he’s also irascible, impatient, and often foul mouthed. He does and says things he often regrets but, of course, that only makes him more human. Conversely, when he chooses to be, he can be utterly, bone meltingly charming. His integrity isn’t in any doubt because he’s honest and fair to a fault and cannot be swayed from his duty. The men who follow him do so unwaveringly because his direct and honest approach inspires that ‘love me or hate me’ culture. Such is the strength of his love for Kirsty that he is soon in turmoil over how to protect her from the consequences of her own actions, whilst still trying not to compromise his own integrity.

Kirsty is a worthy opponent for Robert. He’s a man who doesn’t trust easily, especially given his own background, upbringing and war time experiences. Handing his heart over to Kirsty for safekeeping says a lot about her character and the trust he has in her. Robert’s high standards definitely count for a lot - not only is Kirsty beautiful and desirable, but she is also feisty and fiercely loyal. Her beliefs may be in direct opposition to his own and her refusal to dissemble might frustrate him but still he loves and admires her and desperately tries to find a way to navigate this almost impossible situation so they can be together

The author’s love for her subject is obvious in every beautifully crafted sentence and each tender lover’s word she writes and I can hardly wait for the final book in this epic love story. Lovers of this period of history will know the outcome for Scotland as far as the politics are concerned. Nevertheless, Ms. Craig has still imbued the series with a tenseness and drama that grips and intrigues the reader/listener with a background story that shocks and revolts. It is this background drama that is the catalyst that unites the lovers - their beliefs coming second to the shocking reality of what has taken place and which is not connected to their political affiliations.

The highly talented actor, Steve Worsley is the perfect choice to perform this series. A native Scot, his interpretation and voicing of the many, diverse characters with their varied colloquial accents is perfect to my ears. From eyes-to-ears - how I imagine he would sound after reading the ebook, to how Steve Worsley voices him, Robert Catto could not be improved upon. Mr. Worsley has transformed him into a living, breathing, character who sounds exactly as I imagine him - snarky, sarcastic and impatient, but also with the tender lover’s voice he keeps especially for his Kirsty.

There are so many characters but all are superbly portrayed. Deserving of a special mention are ‘the wee witch’, aka Betty, Geordie, the young lad Robert has taken under his protection and Joshua, the young slave boy - all are stand out characters with unique voices. Charlotte Liddell - who really does sound as evil and corrupt on Steve Worsley’s tongue as she is portrayed, Charlotte’s weak brother, Cosmo and especially the sinister, calculating Arthur Menzies who sends a shiver down the spine. All are expertly and realistically portrayed.

I await, with much anticipation for On the Wings of the Storm, the final book in this wonderful series. Highly recommended.

‘Storm Tossed Moon’ is that perfect mix of a really compelling tale and a superb narrator. The narrative is the third book in the series and takes you back to mid 18thC Edinburgh in the run up to the Jacobite rebellion. Maggie Craig manages to create real drama and emotion in the characters and story with so much nuance they feel very real. I fell a bit in love with the main character. Edinbugh and the surrounds are so richly conjoured too, you can really picture it in the past. Narrator is superb and gives character and depth to story (could listen to him all day). It’s worth listening to the series in order because the story really builds. I’ve relistened several times and find more in the books each time.

Atmospheric and compelling
