The most important book of the year.
I always hesitate to describe something as “important” as that tends to put some people off, but it’s an entirely appropriate word to use here, and for all of the right reasons.
Modern Slavery is a blight on the world, and particularly on Western Societies. This book not only shines a light on stories that so often go untold but it does so in the most compassionate, caring and sensitive way, without shying away from the detail that we all need to be aware of.
We all need to know more about this issue, we all need to care more about it, we all need to start doing more. Through intelligent, informative journalism such as this we will hopefully raise the profile of modern slavery and people trafficking as issues, and get those with the power to do most about to take it more seriously.
I don’t just ask you all to read this book, I implore you. It will open your mind to things that you almost certainly haven’t thought about enough.
A must read.

Shocking but very interesting book.
The narrator is fantastic. Very sad to see how many people have no issue with treating other people less than human. I don't know how they can just sleep at night. Eye opening.

Depths of humanity and inhumanity in the UK
Incredibly disturbing yet important book.You read about this subject in the news and know it's there, but the sheer detail, breadth and scale of the book; the inhumanity of the perpetrators and enablers and the sheer humanity of the victims and those fighting to help them really brings it home.
Having excellent read books on modern slavery in the global context by siddarth kara, this was a significant companion with a focus on the UK. It's heartbreaking how the odds are so stacked against the victims, and even more so how those in positions of power who should be helping them don't listen or don't care.
Particularly disturbing was the story of J, which was so shocking and unbelievable it occurred in this country in the 21st century. She was abused from such a young age and subsequently blamed for it; let down so poorly by social care, family and the police.It's a wonder she was able to get out from the situation and had such strength to go on and make something from her life.
Throughout the book it seems as though one of the few beacons of hope and kindness is the Salvation Army. After listening to this I made a small but hopefully useful donation to them.
As an aside, the reading by the author (also a BBC radio presenter) was top notch - clear and emotive, particularly given the content.
