Story
The Roman army was the greatest fighting machine the ancient world produced. The Roman Empire depended on soldiers not just to win its wars, defend its frontiers and control the seas but also to act as the engine of the state. Roman legionaries and auxiliaries came from across the Roman world and beyond. They served as tax collectors, policemen, surveyors, as civil engineers and, if they survived, in retirement, as civic worthies, craftsmen and politicians. Some even rose to become emperors.

Summary
The long awaited prequel to the award-winning Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer series that started with the best-selling military fantasy book Stiger's Tigers.
A nobleman from an infamous family, Ben Stiger finds himself freshly assigned to Third Legion, Seventh Company as a lowly lieutenant in the opening stages of war between the Empire and the Kingdom of the Rivan. Third Legion has been tasked with pursuing a retreating Rivan army back to the border where the Empire can take the fight into enemy territory. However, a major obstacle stands in Third Legion's path: the river Hana. The crossing is sure to be contested and dangerous. Should Third Legion fail to force a crossing, the entire campaign could grind to a disastrous halt.
This is Stiger's first military appointment. Inexperienced, young and unsure of himself, Stiger is ostracized by his fellow lieutenants. Worse, he's been placed under the command of an incompetent officer. With life and reputation on the line, he must learn to understand men far beneath his station and lead them into battle. Stiger struggles not only against the enemy, but against his family's history and his own side to prove himself worthy of serving the empire he loves and earning the respect of the men he leads.
Set amidst the backdrop of an epic war, there are greater forces at work than the young Stiger can even begin to imagine, setting him on the dangerous and lonely path of destiny.
Note: This is a prequel novel. To avoid unwanted surprises or spoilers, it is recommended to begin the series with Stiger's Tigers, Book 1 of the Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer series. However, if that sort of thing does not bother you, feel free to dive in and enjoy the adventure.

Interesting Diversion
I am one of the few who have very much enjoyed this series. It is a niche with its rare mix of gritty historical style fiction based on the Roman legions and classic fantasy. This takes us back in time to the start of Stiger's military career. It focuses very much on that side of it with much of the fantasy pared back to almost nothing. Given the relative scarcity of magic and mystical races in this world that is perfectly reasonable and consistent with Stiger's knowledge of them in the previous books.
We are given some great background to Stiger's development as an army officer and how his attitudes changed over time. It's a very enjoyable story which passed by in what seemed like a very small amount of time. The battle scenes are once again very well described.
In all an interesting diversion and I'd be happy to read more of this back story . . . though not at the expense of seeing the main storyline resume!

Excellent mash up Roman Legion & low fantasy
Marc Edelheit is a super writer- this is actually the first book in the prequel series to Stiger's Tigers. A super tale with excellent narration by Steven Brand that centers around the maturation and exploits of a young legionary officer Stiger. Set in a fictional world Ithros empire that mimics the Roman Empire Stiger must overcome many obstacles on his way to becoming the hardened Legionary leader he is later in the Series. Excellent description of tactics used by the Romans. Who are the Rivan (their enemies) modeled after? Well not the Parthians (that I can tell) nor the Persians (that I could tell). That is the question that I want answered! Well done!
Great historical detail (exactly like the Romans)

TALES OF THE SEVENTH?
This is a prequel to the Chronicles series, so I don't know why it is referred to as book 4 of that series, which it clearly is not as far as I am concerned. Rather it stands on its own.
It is a good story, and I liked the ending.
I'm not all that happy the the prequel was written/published while Stiger is in some sort of time warp chasing an evil, dark minion.
However, seeing as how it was, where is part 2? Is Edelheit going all Weber/Ringo-ish on us i .e. That is starting multiple story lines/arcs at the same time rather than finishing one before starting another? Minus 2 stars for pulling that sorry stunt.

Better than expected
I have 2 issues with this,
1. the lack of difference in voices for characters
2. the length is short
Its a nice story and as someone listening to the prequl first, it's a good starting point so far. I got lost in this book while at work, it made the time fly by. it's why I wish it was longer, lucky for me there are more books. The character development so far is great and I hope it gets better. For the narrator pretty much having the same voice for everyone is kinda a let down, but I honestly didn't mind for this book just because of how good the story is. It also help the narrator has a nice voice
