When Lydia gets a lead on the whereabouts of Jonathan Sterling, she concludes her training with a legendary immortal sorcerer and puts a plan in motion for his capture. Near Selyr, Taelien reunites with an old friend - Wrynn Jaden, the legendary Witch of a Thousand Shadows - and meets with Jonan to make a deal. Jonan, of course, has other concerns. His master, the legendary Lady of Thieves herself, has given him a new assignment - one that hints at world-shaping events, if he can survive the mission. Keras Selyrian is already well on the way to cutting his name into the annals of legend. He’s fought false divinities, thieving sorcerers, and corrupt demigods - and left them defeated in his wake. But he’s a long way from home, and Kaldwyn offers a different brand of danger than he’s used to. He’s already got a sword of unfathomable power, but it’s damaged and leaking world-annihilating mana, so he’s in the market for a new one. Possibly six. The more the better, really.

Story
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Summary
The immortal sorcerers - three legendary figures that toppled the empire of Xixis. Each has lived for over a hundred years, leaving a powerful legacy in their wake.
But their children do not share their renowned immortality, and when the firstborn son of Edrick Theas is killed, sorceress Lydia Hastings is called to investigate the murder. When she discovers a sorcerous trail left by a creature of unfathomable power, she quickly realizes she needs outside help. And while Jonan Kestrian - a spy for a rival military power - might not be Lydia's first choice for an ally, she knows that he has the knowledge and skills that she needs.
While Lydia and Jonan trace the assassin's trail, Taelien undergoes the Trials of Unyielding Steel, a series of tests to ensure his entry into the Paladins of Tae'os. As he trains for his trials, Taelien faces his fiercest rival yet: Velas Jaldin, a former member of Orlyn's Queensguard with the power to manipulate motion at her whim. With skills far beyond those of an ordinary soldier, the former Queensguard might be the killer that Lydia seeks - or the assassin's next victim.

Generally good, with some inconsistencies and gaps
While a good story, and brilliantly excited, it does lack something in regards to fine detail and there appears to be a few plot holes. I'm a big fan of the auther and found his latter books especially good but this trilogy feels like it needs a little polish. I still really enjoyed it however, and think the author has a devoloped fantastic diminesional characters and deep fantasy world with great potential.

Wonderful Improvement
What made the experience of listening to Stealing Sorcery the most enjoyable?
Stealing Sorcery, the second book in Andrew Rowe's series, The War of Broken Mirrors, is very much a coming of age novel in every way: for the characters, the plot, the antagonists, and, most importantly, the author. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Nick Podehl's rendition of the characters as he took on the growing cast. Andrew Rowe's world is starting to grow from an interesting idea into a more polished and dangerous place. Whereas the the first book in the series, Forging Divinity, seemed a bit cutesy at times, this second book has worked hard to bring more relevance to the characters' actions and driving purpose.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed learning more about what drove each of the characters to act as they do. I also liked some of the intrigue, although it still feels a bit forced at times. The magic system is interesting and starting to mature a bit as the fields of sorcery are broadened and expounded upon. Much of the plot seems to be based around a sort of gulf between those that have new/elite/ancient knowledge of sorcery or abilities and those who do not. Even though I believe this gulf could have been exploited a bit more to bring a bit more color and, perhaps, a bit more realism to the story, it nevertheless provides an interesting story dynamic that Rowe is tapping into more and more. It is always fun to learn with a character as they uncover their own capabilities and learning along with Sal is no exception.
Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
As usual, Nick Podehl delivers a great performance. I enjoyed the different accents that Nick chose to embody the different elements of Rowe's society. In fact, I really feel that Nick's narration lifts this story a bit by bringing a bit more lucidity to elements that are still a bit lacking in background information. ~ A great marriage between author and artist here.

Any additional comments?
I'm glad I pushed through some slow parts in the first book, because book 2 was so worth it. I love everything about Velas, and the dynamic between all the characters is great. The trials are all interesting in their own way -- no straight forward duels in this book. This is probably the best book I have read in months.

The War of Broken Mirrors sharpens its fragments
Picking up where Forging Divinity left off, Stealing Sorcery is a superior sequel. The plot develops in a more interesting manner and the reveal is satisfying than Forging Divinity. Andrew Rowe has improved his storytelling between books and I continue to enjoy his style of switching first person perspectives with each chapter.
Nick Podehl continues to deliver amazing performances. I will continue to choose books based on his narration as it has led me to good books and top notch performances. He does a fantastic job of layering on characters with his unique voices for each character.

This story does away with the all-too-common Mary Sue main characters, allowing them to have problems and failings. This gave it a very rational feel. The story was a pleasure through and through, and the narrator is the best I've heard.

I live the adult humor and ever characters I also liked how the author wrote this book with the different characters and where they all go into place while the current events are also going!! Plus i really cant believe I found a book that's got a amazing magic system and they even explain how it all works. On top of a great narrator Nick put outs the best in each character.
