I really enjoyed this story and narration. Some of the plot points where signposted pretty early on, but the story was still entertaining reaching the conclusion of the book.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series

This author is new to me, but halfway through this tale I knew that I would have to read the next episode. Body-modding is, I am sure, not a new concept in science fiction writing, but it's prominence in the plot of Stars uncharted is new to me. All the ingredients of good space opera are here including an interesting band of characters destined to become an integral team. You care about the main characters. Multiple secrets are being kept from each other - and one of two are being kept from the reader. There were enough concepts new to me to make it all interesting. I read a lot of space opera (much of which I enjoy - Weber, Moon, Shepherd etc) and I found this very engaging and moreish! One character's about-turn was a bit surprising but in the whole the plot held together. A number of issues are resolved by the end but the situation is set up to lead in to the sequel. In the whole a very enjoyable experience for the reader.

Just listened to this again before listening to the next one, Stars Beyond. It’s nearly a year since I last listened to it, so I don’t remember everything, but I enjoyed it, and had no problems with listening to the whole thing again.

There’s another review for this audio version that complains about superfluous information, and too much detail about modding, and I agree that at times I found myself thinking, yeah yeah, we know, just get on with it, but this is a book to get absorbed in, and just go with the flow. It gets there, it rarely drags, there’s enough excitement, with several mildly implausible escapes and rescues. The amoral baddies are suitably unpleasant, and there are possibly some triggers for domestic abuse, so be aware if this troubles you. What’s nice is the gradual bonding, the building of a new team, the learning to trust. “Modding” is a tad too convenient - broken arm, no problem just pop into this machine for a bit, need to change your appearance, no problem, just pop into this machine for a bit longer, baddies over done the beatings, face burnt off by acid? No problem, just…. but hey, it’s the future, it’s a novel, it’s allowed convenient technology.

This isn’t a whizz, bang, whop, crash, panting lust kinda book, - it’s a character driven novel, much like the authors’ Linesman series (also very good, but also takes it time). Very well narrated with the narrator managing a range of characters and accents (including French Jacques, and Spanish Carlos), but she gets a bit soft spoken for some of them, which can mean upping the volume at times. I didn’t notice any pronunciation or editing bloopers.

The story is extremely flat, mostly a sequence of action scenes and catastrophic events. The science seems to be all about mixing basic chemicals to do gene and body modifications. Some fancy brought in with fictional trans uranium elements. There is no real development of the characters or the story. Big waste of lifetime. The reader puts in a lot of effort. I pity her for having to read this though.

At the moment I don't know if I can face trying to go further with this. It feels like we have to know every thought and word that passes through the main body moder's mind or lips. And a great deal more care needed to be used pronouncing her name, especially at the start! Nika? Sounds like...!

Why couldn't an editor have glossed over some of the discussion about turning the gene machine into a ship's calibrator?! Unlike some other reviewers, I was intrigued by the body moding initially, the detail it went into, but it's seriously outstayed it's welcome by the time the moder's get to the ship.

I really enjoyed the linesman books but this one has really lost it's way.

So much ANNOYING utterly superfluous dialogue!!!
