Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The fate of the Chiss Ascendancy hangs in the balance in the epic finale of the Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy from best-selling author Timothy Zahn.

For thousands of years The Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a centre of power and a beacon of integrity. Led by the Nine Ruling Families, their leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions.

But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe that winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer towards civil war.

The Chiss are no strangers to war. Their mythic status in the Chaos was earned through conflict and terrible deeds, some long buried. Until now. To ensure the Ascendancy's future, Thrawn will delve deep into its past, uncovering the dark secrets surrounding the ascension of the First Ruling Family. But the truth of a family's legacy is only as strong as the legend that supports it. Even if that legend turns out to be a lie.

To secure the salvation of the Ascendancy, is Thrawn willing to sacrifice everything? Including the only home he has ever known?

weakest Thrawn book

the weakest Thrawn book of both new trilogies (and the old ones). The length becomes bloated as it drags on at times (I usually would consider a long audiobook a good thing, this is one of 2 cases where I felt they were bloated and needlesly stretched). And while I doubt this was intentional it gives of a creepy vibe of anti goverment/pro military.

I love Thrawn!

I wish I had started by this trilogy and not discovered Thrawn when he met the Empire. I would have enjoyed continuing his adventure knowing all his background and I would have understood better the connections with the Ascendancy.
Anyway it was a delight learning about the origin story of the greatest and most likable villain of this universe.

Compelled to finish

It was a little hard to keep track of all the characters but in the end the story came together. The narration is very good, and full credit for all the voices.

What an amazing web of deceit!

The conclusion to this latest trilogy brings everything from the last trilogy through rebels to Ahsoka together for the ultimate Thrawn-esque plan. I hope Filoni’s movie brings Thrawn story to its climax. And if not, I hope Timothy Zahn continues with a new Thrawn trilogy. And that Marc Thompson continues to narrate his novels. I feel like I’ve seen everything firsthand when he’s in my ear!

Good but slow and a bit tiresome.

Ok right off the bat, Marc Thompson is a brilliant narrator, he can do a massive range of different voices and accents. You'd be forgiven for thinking the book was read by a whole cast of actors, he's that good. Add in the music and sound effects and it all adds up to being a wonderful performance that brings the story to life.

Speaking of the story, it's a good story but I have some criticisms. First of all, for a book about Thrawn, it doesn't have enough Thrawn in it, too much time is spent on other characters whilst Thrawn is... "off-screen" for want of a better term. Speaking of characters, there are a couple in there that are so bloody mindedly focused on their own utter stupidity that you just want to scream at them. It can get quite tiresome listening to their thoughts, speech and actions when they act in such ridiculously illogical and moronic ways.

Those niggles asside, it's a great audiobook overall.

The best of the best

Just read it! But of course if you've read the previous two installments in the series, you probably don't need more encouragement XD. Outstanding story and performance, thank you for the experience.
