Summary

An all-new novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!

In a desperate attempt to prevent the artificial intelligence known as Control from seizing crucial information that could destroy all sentient life, Commander Michael Burnham donned the “Red Angel” time-travel suit and guided the USS Discovery into the future and out of harm’s way. But something has gone terribly wrong, and Burnham has somehow arrived in a place far different from anything she could have imagined - more than 900 years out of her time, with Discovery nowhere to be found, and where the mysterious and cataclysmic event known as “the Burn” has utterly decimated Starfleet and, with it, the United Federation of Planets. How then can she possibly exist day-to-day in this strange place? What worlds are out there waiting to be discovered? Do any remnants of Starfleet and the Federation possibly endure? With more questions than answers, Burnham must nevertheless forge new friendships and new alliances if she hopes to survive this future long enough for the Discovery crew to find her....

Amazing Companion

An incredible companion to Discovery season 3, chronicling Burnham's "Gap Year" searching for info about the Burn.

McCormack expertly captures the banter and relationship between Burnham and Book (and Grudge!), while expanding on numerous elements mentioned or touched upon briefly in the series itself.

January LaVoy's voiceover work is top notch, I don't know how she does it, but with simple infections or tones, it's practically Burnham's voice!

I didn't want the story to end and could have listened to many more hours of this wonderful book.

A must listen for any Discovery fan

great and a must listen for any Discovery fan! Michael Burnham's lost year away from Discovery, more than an explanation of the slightly unfamiliar attitude that we find her having when reunited with her ship mates in the 3rd episode of season three.

Made a grown man cry

Having loved the show I decided I needed to try something different for the collection and I stumbled upon this ... January LaVoy... my God you’re perfect! You sound exactly like Michael and Book... the way you connected to the character of Sahil gave him such depth without having to drag on. The emotion in the story telling actually made me shout “YEAHHHHHH BOOK LETS F’ing GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!” Snd much much more throughout my read. The narration and detail allowed me to leave reality almost, like I was apart of a movie.. each new obstacle that arises never takes away from the prime directive .. FIND DISCOVERY and find my friends. Oh man I could go on and on ... by the end I was letting tears fall as I coasted my garbage truck down the highway lol I need more! January LaVoy, you did awesome!!! Una McCormack, you’re a legendary no other way to describe the detail that came out of this piece!!

Love Star Trek - blown away by the narrator!

The book did a great job of filling in the gaps of Michael’s journey between the end of season two and the beginning of season three. January LaVoy is my new favorite narrator. To call what she does mimicry is an understatement. She embodies every aspect of the character and has mastered their dialect as well as speech patterns. She’s brilliant and I hope they continue to use her for the rest of the series.

The best of trek

Wow. Just wow. This book was everything I wished for in a discovery book. The characters felt like the characters in the show. The reader was engaging and just executed things so well. The world building and character development was in depth enough but not so deep it was tiring. Pace was just exciting enough without feeling too fast and kept me coming back. This book has me rewatching the third season with deeper love for the series and characters than even before. Seriously loved this and recommend to everyone who’s made it to season three episode 1. It’s the pause between that episode and the next it feels like. The year between. I’ve gone through all the discovery books now and this is the One!
Get this book Trekkie it’s worth it! Please more by this author and reader.

Great story and information filler for Disco fans!

If you are a fan of Discovery this is a must have! The story goes beyond the show and helps the reader understand some of the issues the Discovery crew is facing. Great performance by the voice actor. I DEFINITELY recommend!

Just OK I guess. Got bored halfway

You love star trek? So do I! Do you like Michael Burnham whining from season 1-3 in discovery? Well, get read to get that for a whole day of reading thanks to this audiobook.

Narrator did amazing but unfortunately that did not salvage this audiobook for me. The story writing is what got me on this one.

Thoroughly Enjoyable!

This book fills in the story of Michael Burnham and what happened to her during the time after her trip in the Red Angel suit. as I don’t want to write any spoilers, I’ll just say this: if you are streaming Star Trek Discovery and reading / listening to the ST:DISCO books: 1) watch seasons 1 & 2 and a minimum of episodes 1 & 2 of season 3 BEFORE listening to this book! That way the book won’t spoil any episodes for you!
It is very well written and exceedingly well performed.

January LaVoy made me forget the narrator within the first few minutes … which is really what you want.
Hopefully Ms LaVoy’s performance will encourage Audible to finally employ other narrators besides Robert Petkoff! (Who is fine for some Star Trek authors but can seriously mangle a book he’s “not in to”)

Book & Grudge! Great--Set Between Seasons 2 & 3!

This was a good Disco story set between seasons 2 & 3. We find out what Michael has been up to between seasons and also get lots of time with Book and Grudge. I really enjoyed Book and Grudge being added to the cast of season 3, so I enjoyed spending more time with them in this novel. I find the character of Michael to be pretty hit or miss, but she was well-written here.

January LaVoy's narration was very strong and on point (as it was in Discovery: Die Standing) and really helped push the narrative along.

I was very satisfied with this one overall.

Repetitious

Michael is a fascinating character but as written by Ms. McCormack she cannot carry a story alone. The characters were two dimensional at best and I was unable to invest in anyone. For example, Michaels works as an independent courier flying her own small ship. Whole pages are devoted to listening to Michael’s thoughts which often consisted of longing presented in 3 of 5 different ways. ‘I miss my mom. It’s so lonely here without mom. It’s been such a long and sad time without mom.” And so on.

The narrator is adequate though her idea of a British accent is unidentifiable.

I quit with 9 hours left to listen to.

Delightful

This is a fun companion to season three. The overall story is told over a series of adventures, making the book the feel like a season of the show. The reader is fantastic- she does an incredible job bringing the characters to life. Recommended.

Absorbing and entertaining

January LaVoy did a great job narrating (performing) and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story. I believe this was the best audible experience for me. I am a Star Trek fan but this is written in such a natural way that anyone listening could enjoy this adventure. Set far in the future with all the technology we might expect in this era but very grounded and human in many ways.
