About this listen

“Hanley’s dyslexia makes this audio format especially significant, as it represents an accessible way for readers with learning disabilities, just like him, to comprehend and enjoy his story.”—Booklist

This program is read by the author, comedian and severe dyslexic P
hil Hanley, who reveals his unlikely path to success in a story that is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

When Phil Hanley was in first grade, he realized something that would forever set him apart from his peers: he couldn’t read. His teachers were ill-equipped to assist him, and he slipped through the school’s cracks, year by year falling further and further behind his friends. Finally, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that would shape the rest of his life.

Unable to pursue college or a traditional job, Phil was thrust into a life defined by unconventional twists, including a stint as a runway model in Europe. Eventually, he found himself on a stage with a microphone, a spotlight, and five minutes of jokes. Unlike so many previous pursuits, stand-up felt right to Phil, and he soon discovered that the more he worked at it, the more he got out of it—a realization that, he compellingly argues, saved his life. Spellbound is a story of humor and also of struggle and heartbreak, of constantly living in a world that sees things differently than you do, and of triumph over adversity.

Hanley tells us that dyslexia can be a huge challenge, but it doesn’t spell certain condemnation (and neither can he). Just the opposite: dyslexia has been more than a blessing in his life—it’s been his North Star.

I should preface this by saying that I only know about Phil through watching him on YouTube. Yes I like to think I'm on first name to terms. As a comedian he is hysterical and I am finding myself daily going to YouTube, hoping he's posted a new clip. As somebody who has the mildest form of dyslexia. I get left right mixed up, I get my b and d back to front (Phil's equivalent of a h) and I'm a very slow reader but I can read. But, no where near the extent to Phil, I wanted to know what his experience was like. His story is moving, funny and heartfelt. There were times when he was reading that I thought I could hear his voice crack with emotion. I think it's an inspirational read and hopefully gives hope to those with dyslexia. I think at the end when he talks about the number of people in prison and the way the school system treats neurodivergent children is this strong message for change. I shed a few too many tears in reading the book. He is a driven man, I'll have what he's having.

a moving poignant sometimes hilarious story

I've watched Phil's hilarious standup and crowd work, so far only on social media, as I live in Glasgow, Scotland. Loved this book, very honest, funny and an uplifting and emotional look at dyslexia and neuro divergence, plus an insight into what it takes to be an amazing comic like he is.
