About this listen

Patricia Cornwell has a sixth sense about the men and women in blue. In Hornet's Nest, her page-turning novel about crime and police in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cornwell moved behind the badges of these real-life heroes to uncover flesh-and-blood characters who strode through her pages to reveal vulnerable, passionate, brave, sometimes doubting, always fascinating figures.

In Southern Cross, Cornwell takes us even closer to the personal and professional lives of big-city police, in a story of corruption, scandal, and robberies that escalate to murder. This time, her setting is Richmond, Virginia, where Charlotte Police Chief Judy Hammer has been brought by an NIJ grant to clean up the police force. Reeling from the recent death of her husband, and resented by the police force, city manager, and mayor of Richmond, Hammer is joined by her deputy chief Virginia West and rookie Andy Brazil on the most difficult assignment of her career. In the face of overwhelming public scrutiny, the trio must bring truth, order, and sanity to a city in trouble.

The story, as expected of Patricia Cornwell, is very good, with many a twist and turn to maintain interest, but I found the narration of Lorelei King absolutely spellbinding, especially in the rather manic English of one protagonist in particular.

the characterisation by the narrator was superb

I usually like Patricia Cornwall but this seemed very slow to get going. The narrator is excellent which helped me get through to a much better last few chapters.

Disappointing

Enjoyed the narrator's use of language variety, added with the use of slang and dialect. Really defined the story, in its entirety.

Exciting!

Patrici Cornwell is a very accomplished story teller, and flow seamlessly throughout. The characters are believable, and necessary to the plot. Brilliantly narrated once again by Lorelei King.

Just as good as the first in the series

Brilliant narration of a really good story. one of the characters, Weed reminded me that many kids who seem to have problems may be gifted in other areas of life.
A lot of bad language but probably the norm for the time and area.

Another great story
