About this listen

Burned out from a string of terrible dates and even worse dating apps, Penny Jane has had enough. Luckily, she’s almost at the end of her software engineering degree, and has a brilliant idea – Waves, a dating app focused entirely on audio connections, removing looks from the equation. She’s convinced this is going to be the key to finding an authentic connection. But every great idea also needs great money behind it, and Penny is forced to partner with fellow student Sebastian Harkin, a charming but cocky business major who's allergic to commitment.

The son of a bona fide tech mogul, Sebastian knows a good idea when he sees one, and Waves has all the makings of a massive success. A massive success is just what he needs to kickstart his career after graduation—and maybe, finally, make his dad notice him. Penny is spiky and defensive, but underneath all of that, Sebastian finds her oddly...endearing.

On paper, Penny and Sebastian don’t make much sense, but over the late-night soundwaves, there’s undeniable chemistry growing between them. As outside pressure mounts and real feelings start to develop, can they get vulnerable and give their budding relationship a real shot? Or will their chance at real love be left unmatched?

From ghosting to situationships, breaking up to making out, celebrate the courage it takes to be truly seen in this sparkling, sexy exploration of modern dating.

I started listening to this without reading its summary, so I had no idea what it was about. Turned out it was about two undergrads working together on a project. At first, I thought it would be a sweet rom-com. I'm glad that there are more to it. The characters seemed real. The storyline was woven tightly and nicely. It was convincing and entertaining the whole way through. The performance was very good and natural as well. I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook.

An enjoyable listening the whole way through

Alyce Adams’s Sounds Like You offers a delightful blend of contemporary romance, entrepreneurial ambition, and emotional insight, all brought to life through top-notch dual narration. At the center of the story is Penny Jane, a driven software engineering student who’s fed up with fruitless dating apps and the endless stream of lackluster encounters they bring. Determined to find a more meaningful way for people to connect, she devises Waves—an audio-only platform that strips away the superficiality of photos and challenges users to engage using nothing but their voices. Yet, despite Penny’s passion and programming prowess, she needs financial muscle to take Waves from concept to reality, and that’s where Sebastian Harkin comes in.

Sebastian, the son of a tech mogul, is well-versed in the high-stakes world of business and knows a promising idea when he sees one. His father’s expectations and his own desire to prove himself push him to invest his energy in Waves, even if it means working closely with Penny, who finds him both alluring and exasperating. Their collaboration unfolds against a backdrop of college life and looming graduation, and Adams skillfully illustrates how ambition, pressure, and personal histories can collide—sometimes forging powerful bonds in the process. As Penny’s guarded nature meets Sebastian’s smooth confidence, real sparks emerge through late-night brainstorming sessions that crackle with chemistry. The question, however, is whether they can be vulnerable enough to nurture those sparks into something lasting once real feelings start to complicate their business partnership.

The novel’s focus on audio connections perfectly complements the audiobook format, showcasing the power of human voices to convey unguarded truths. Georgia McCudden and Oliver Mills excel in their roles, breathing personality into each character and striking an ideal balance between wit, longing, and raw tension. McCudden captures Penny’s blend of determination and defensiveness, while Mills brings a charismatic edge to Sebastian, never letting his cockiness overshadow his depth. Their interplay heightens the authenticity of every scene, making the listening experience immersive and heartfelt.

In a world where ghosting, swipe culture, and “situationships” are all too familiar, Sounds Like You stands out as a refreshingly optimistic reminder that true connection is possible—even if it requires stepping beyond comfort zones. With clever commentary on modern romance, a vibrant celebration of technology’s potential for genuine human connection, and the undeniable chemistry between Penny and Sebastian, Alyce Adams delivers a sparkling, sexy exploration of how we fall in love today. Fans of engaging rom-coms and tech-centric dramas alike will find themselves rooting for these characters and reflecting on the courage it takes to be truly seen and heard.

Enjoyed this from the start. University students create a dating app without photos. A great concept in the digital age we now live in, where social media sadly pollutes minds into thinking we have to look and behave a certain way, bringing unhealthy competition, losing the personal touch.

The author has very nicely positioned the importance of engagement, getting to know someone for their values and beliefs, what makes them happy or sad, and how there’s a lot more to consider than a glossy photo when falling in love. It’s refreshing to listen to a book that focuses on the importance of attraction, of the mind, the soul and not just what social media pushes on us.

The author appears to have left an opening for another book - look forward to it.
