About this listen

Sam Delaney was Jack the Lad. He was confident, loud and funny; an absolute legend, to be honest. Or at least that was what he pretended to be.

But when he reached his thirties, work, relationships and fatherhood started to take their toll. Like so many blokes who seemed to be totally fine, he often felt like a complete failure whose life was out of control; anxiety and depression had secretly plagued him for years. Turning to drink and drugs only made things worse. Sam knew he needed help - the problem was that he thought self-help was for hippies, sobriety was for weirdos and therapy was for neurotics.

Keeping it all inside was what nearly dragged Sam under. Then he began to open up and share his story with others. Soon his life started to get better and better. Now, he's written this book to help you do the same.

Covering his complex upbringing, fast paced career, struggles with addiction and recovery, and detailing lessons he's learnt along the way, Sort Your Head Out is Sam's startlingly raw, compassionate and hilarious account of why opening up is the first step to sorting your head out.

Critic reviews

"This is a great book, and an important one. It's the one I would give to any friend who I observed struggling with those issues, as it's written in a genuinely human way, devoid of psychobabble, moralizing, victimhood embracing and judgement. It comes from a place of hard-won experience, told with total honesty. It will do more than just save lives, it will help those saved lives feel like they're genuinely worth living." (Irvine Welsh)

"An honest, funny account of how we're all capable of changing for the better." (Seth Meyers)

"This book tells it like it is in an honest and down to earth way that men who find it hard to talk about mental health will be able to relate to easily. Sam really knows his stuff on this subject and is very frank about his struggles. A great, motivating book that can really help - every bloke should read it." (Shaun Ryder)

I genuinely believed that the type of things Sam talks about in this book were only happening to me and others would never understand it. The drink, the drugs, fatherhood all of these things have been a struggle for me in my 20’s and 30’s but hearing someone talk about their problems and what they went through and being able to relate to this level is truly incredible for me. It is nice to know I’m not alone. Added to this and not something Sam would know but between his podcasts the Reset and Top Flight Time Machine has helped me get through some problematic times in my life, whether it’s hearing peoples stories on the reset or just being able to laugh to the utter madness of TFTM. Thank you Sam, you’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know and Sort Your Head Out is a book I will utilise time and time again! TTFN!

Highly Recommend for men of all ages

I’ve been listening to Sam’s work via his podcasts so this was no surprise to me how insightful and articulate this book is. Sam is not so much offering a guidance as an insight into his own life and it was hard not to see the comparisons in my own life. Having just recently lost my dad too this gave me a lift and made me realise I need to be more kind to myself and invest more in the just rest lifestyle in other words appreciate the simple things in life around me. Wholeheartedly recommend this book.

A great insight into male mental health

I decided to buy the audiobook instead of the print version as I’m aware of Britains top journalist abilities to deliver a great yarn from his various podcasts.

I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a unique talent to discuss topics so personal and serious in a manner which is also funny, enlightening and thought provoking for the listener.

I was actually quite surprised how relatable some of it was to me upon reflection, which I guess is what Sam would like everyone to do for the sake of their mental health.

Superb.

Funny, enlightening and thought provoking.
