Summary

Another engrossing story.
I have to admit to this not being my favourite of all Nicola Upson books, due mainly to their being so many characters. The narration, as always brilliant by Sandra Duncan, saved it for me, however.

Captivating but with a ‘but’ at the end.
I will not do a spoiler of the plot here.....however . The story kept me hooked and Nicola did a good job of different times and the happenings taking us back in order to understand the now of the book. I loved the references made to places East Sussex and Lewes being very familiar to me. BUT no to the murderer and the complexity of guilt and shame that hang around the book....even if the prejudices of the time were true are unbelievable.

Good story marred by narration
Another engaging and interesting story in this series that gives an insight into Josephine Tey’s early life and the fears of exposure by gay people and the prejudices they had to endure. The narrator was fine in earlier books but in this one many of the females are caricatures with squeaky or screechy voices that are at times painful to hear. This spoiled my pleasure in an otherwise good book.

An enthralling tale set around the Suusex Downs
Set in Suusex initially during the First World War and then the 1930s. the tragic death of a young girl unravels the lives of the women at the centre of the story and the repercussions last for the rest of their lives. The central character, Josephine Tey, tries in later life to discover the truth of what happened and why, but there is no simple answer. The social constraints of the time and attitudes to women create the context for what happened and the impact on all those involved. The places and some of the characters are based on real places and real people, including Josephine Tey of course, which makes one wonder how much of the story is founded in fact. It was very enjoyable walking well known parts of the South the Downs with the characters and visiting familiar places while being engrossed in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am now going to research the background to see how much really is based on fact. I see that this may be part of a series by Nicola Upson based on Josephine Tey"s mysteries. I think I will keep this as a stand alone good read, at least for the moment, as I don't want to dilute my enjoyment of this book by finding it is part of a formula.

Turgid!
Surprised and disappointed. I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous two books by this author that I have listened to but this just did not hit the spot.
Rambling story and too many characters. I couldn't have cared less to killed the woman.
Never mind. I will still listen to her other works and hope that this is just an anomaly.
