About this listen

Including a letter written and read by the author and an exclusive author interview.

A big-hearted small-town romance from bestselling, award-winning author Elle McNicoll, Some Like it Cold is perfect for fans of Alice Oseman, Beth Reekles
and Gilmore Girls.

After a long absence, 18-year-old Jasper is finally heading home for the holidays - and she's keeping secrets.

Arthur, a budding filmmaker, is turning the town of Lake Pristine into a small town story worthy of the big screen. His plans are disrupted by the arrival of the town's golden girl - the antagonist of his school days; a girl he's never forgotten.

Jasper Montgomery is back in Lake Pristine for one reason: to say goodbye. But before long small-town tensions start to rise, and a certain brooding film buff starts to look like a very big reason to stay . . .

The perfect story to get lost in, Some Like it Cold centres Jasper as an autistic heroine in a big-hearted small-town romance that will melt your heart, from the bestselling author of A Kind of Spark.

Critic reviews

A clever, poignant and healing love story . . . Some Like It Cold is a heartfelt romance that is sweeping in its scope and tender in its emotional depth. McNicoll has crafted a powerful ode to love in all its forms: of community, of home and of ourselves – as well as the genre of romance itself. (Bea Fitzgerald, author of Girl, Goddess, Queen)
As much an ode to the history of the romance genre as a classic yet modern love story in its own right. Achingly honest and heartfelt, this is McNicoll at her best. It is quite literally my favourite romance novel of all time. (Lizzie Huxley-Jones, author of Make You Mine this Christmas)
McNicoll delivers a breathtaking story of love and joy that will keep the reader hooked until the very last page. It was such a pleasure being immersed in Jasper's world, as she navigated family dynamics, friendships, and identity issues in Lake Pristine. (Anika Hussain, author of This Is How You Fall In Love)
A sweet will-they-won't-they rom-com set in a small town, dealing with autism, grief, love and being comfortable in your own skin. This is a cosy, heartwarming wintery romance. (Abiola Bello, author of Only for the Holidays)
I utterly adored this book! Some Like it Cold is a warm, wonderful winter romance to cosy up with - brilliant characters, sizzling chemistry, and so full of heart, Elle has written a truly gorgeous book that’s a must-read this winter. (Beth Reekles, author of The Kissing Booth)
A deliciously cosy winter romance, paired with a thoughtful look at family tensions and societal expectations. (The Observer)

This book is just waiting for a Rom-com film to be made. I started listening the day it started to snow here so I could just imagine I was walking through Lake Pristine, to watch a black and white classic with Jasper.
It really helps me having a neurodiverse main character, to understand what my 13 year old daughter could be feeling from day to day. Thank you again Elle for another brilliant insight and story.

I love Jasper

Loved this book so much, totally relatable, lovely story. Shows different sides of being autistic than the stereotypes which is great

The story is about Jasper an autistic 18 year old, as she returns home to lake pristine after spending some time away at University in a course she didn't want to do.

after making a grand entrance on her return we are introduced to her sister Christine who believe she's the golden girl and should have everything she wants.

Jasper's cousin then decided with his best friend to film a documentary about the village and Air it to the rest of the village about everyday life.

I won't ruin the rest but the ending is truly brave and strong and I absolutely was moved.

as an autistic male once again Elle you've captured the neurodiverse readers attention and represented us truly beautifully.

enjoy the book everyone and I hope you all leave a lovely review afterwards.

This was my first ever audiobook and the book was perfectly timed in accordance to the current weather conditions in the UK 🇬🇧. I will say i struggled a little , i think id have maybe finished this ages ago if i had read this as an ebook but it was enjoyable and cosy. The book felt really relatable to me as a young woman who is disabled as Jasper (our FMC) is autistic and so the feelings described makes me feel seen. Tropes include

I can't believe this is by the same author as a Kind of Spark! it's almost as if she's been captured by a crazed fan who dictated the nonsensical plot and setting and wrote all the dreadful endless cliches and bad metaphors! I am bewildered as to why this has so many good reviews. it makes no sense that the main character agonizes about having to move away when college is only half an hour away. There are so many angsty exchanges about the impossibility of having a relationship when the people live forty minutes apart!! Its utter nonsense. it's also so dull and I had to fast forward to get through it! i am now terrified to read anything else she writes! Please don't get this book!!!

Left me cold! PLEASE DON'T GET THIS IF YOU'RE A FAN!
