Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

On a cold November evening, Guido Brunetti and Paola are up late when a call from his colleague Ispettore Vianello arrives, alerting the Commissario that a hand has been seen in one of Venice's canals. The body is soon found, and Brunetti is assigned to investigate the murder of an undocumented Sri Lankan immigrant. Because no official record of the man's presence in Venice exists, Brunetti is forced to use the city's far richer sources of information: gossip and the memories of people who knew the victim. Curiously, he had been living in a garden house on the grounds of a palazzo owned by a university professor, in which Brunetti discovers books revealing the victim's interest in Buddhism, the revolutionary Tamil Tigers, and the last crop of Italian political terrorists, active in the 1980s.

As the investigation expands, Brunetti, Vianello, Commissario Griffoni, and Signorina Elettra each assemble pieces of a puzzle-random information about real estate and land use, books, university friendships-that appear to have little in common. Until Brunetti stumbles over something that transports him back to his own student days, causing him to reflect on lost ideals and the errors of youth, on Italian politics and history, and on the accidents that sometimes lead to revelation.

Brunetti’s pale shadow

A long time fan of the Commisario and his compatriots sadly this book is real disappointment. There is the kernel of a good storyline but nothing actually happens until chapter 11. More a novella than a novel once it gets going the plot is interesting and the characters their usual engaging selves. Narration as always excellent. So disappointed that Venice, the main character in all the earlier novels, fails to make a convincing appearance.

Excellent

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A gentle, thoughtful, compassionate investigation, steeped in Venetian culture, beautifully read. I learn something from every one of Donna Leon’s novels. This one has encouraged me to look up the era of the Red Brigade in Italian history…
Not for fans of testosterone-fuelled action-packed thrillers.

Lovely writing.

Great story. Beautiful descriptions of Venice. perfect pace. A gentle meandering, in no hurry to get to the end which i really value.

Beautiful

The book is gentle like one of the main characters and is wonderfully performed. I loved it as much as all of the others.

Excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Brunetti book. As ever, the plot is multi layered and it’s a while before the main players are revealed . A very satisfying listen.

Complex

And because of the complexity of the detail, I found this quite a difficult book to listen to what is usual, gripping story

One of her best

Extraordinary that this 32nd outing is one of the best in the series. Absorbing and multi-layered. Requires patience and not the best place to start for new readers of the series.

Excellent!

Excellent as always, and read clearly and with appropriate pronunciation by David Sibley. Much more pleasant to listen to than some of the other Brunetti books which are read in an American drawl which ruined my enjoyment.

Good story but -alas- bad voiced narrator

Listening to this narrator makes your throat ache. He sounds too low, donkey-like braying sound.

Disappointing

If you are expecting this story to get off to a rollicking start, I’m afraid you will have to wait until Chapter 13 before any crime is discovered. Before that we read that Brunetti has to rearrange his library at home and rescue one of his officers who got involved in a demonstration . Not exactly fascinating stuff. I have always loved the novels by Donna Leon and have read them all. This one is disappointing, perhaps because it is the first one I have listened to. The narration is very bland. Perhaps I find this to be so because I have listened to a lot of narrations by Sean Barrett who is able to put in so much characterisation into whatever he reads. This narrator is clear and precise but very dull.
