A social media ban for under 16s does not make the problem disappear. Teenagers will have to use their devices differently now and Smartphone Nation provides the practical solutions you and your family need to take back control.

In this acclaimed book, Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, one of the world’s leading digital literacy experts, gives you the knowledge and the language to explain the reasons behind the ban, why social media can be so harmful and the often disturbing reasons why we each see the particular content we do. The tools in Smartphone Nation are there to help you understand, advocate, and parent around these tricky, constantly changing issues.

From issues of misinformation, body dysmorphia, pornography, to online bullying, this essential guide helps you and your family become more intentional over screen usage – whatever the screen you are using.

Whilst this is unlikely to tell you anything fundamental that you don’t already know, it’s the context, the evidence, the realistic suggestions about what to do which are great. I would genuinely recommend that every single person in the world who owns a smart device listens to this book.

Excellent, accessible and crucial listening

This book provides a cogent analysis of screen addiction among children and adults and plants the blame fairly and squarely with Big Tech and with policymakers who either don't understand what they're dealing with, do understand it but choose to look the other way or are in someway profiting themselves and therefore don't want to upset the apple cart.

It would have benefited from a professional narrator and the frequent pauses should be tightened up so that the narrative rolls in a much more fluid way.

It's essential reading for any parent who is beginning to contemplate or is in the middle of navigating the treacherous seas of social media, algorithms and Big Tech manipulation.

Disturbing yet essential
