Victorian fairytale -like story with amazing Scots narration ( don't worry if you can't understand at first, it took me a chapter or so to acclimatise to the accent, but really adds to the story). Story is sweet but a bit long-winded at times, with a touch of Dickensian social comment

I started the book because I had heard that MacDonald had inspired CS Lewis and Tolkien. The former was a childhood favourite, and the latter an adolescent joy. At first I was put off by the dialect, then I was put off by the overt Christianity. Despite this there is something strangely compelling in the story, in the language and in the imagery. In the end it sort of haunted me, tempting me to go further into its alien landscape and weird fantasy. I would not say 'I loved it' but I would say that it drew me in.
Its definitely worth an attentive listen. …..or two... or maybe even three

This is book was so good. George MacDonald was truly a master of story telling. The perfect story! And Gordon Jack's was perfect.

A Masterpiece

This is a perfect reading of this Scots Victorian bildungsroman. Although the characters speak almost impenetrable broad Scots for big chunks of dialogue, this narrator makes that a delight to listen to rather than a chore. After a few such paragraphs the ear tunes in to the Scots, which is in itself a character in this novel.
The main character is perhaps surreal, but I find him very endearing and symbolic. It reads a bit like a fairy tale blended with Dickensian novel. I will come to it again and again, my two young children (7 and 9) are also loving bits of it as they overheard it while I listened. I am now wishing this same narrator had read all the other novels I want to read. It helps a bit that I listened to him first, I can now almost hear his Scots and Scottish accent as I read silently the texts. Give it a go!
