She staggered a great man. He was reeling. She was overwhelmed.

Fitzwilliam Darcy, standing irritably at the edge of the Meryton assembly, declines to dance with Elizabeth Bennet. In a mood of revulsion, he rejects her without concern of being overheard. Country pretensions are always in need of squashing, and what better way to make clear he would not partner anyone outside his party? However, when he looks over at her, she does not appear humbled at all. She is secretly laughing at him!

Elizabeth is perversely delighted to encounter such an outrageous snob as Mr. Darcy. When he approaches her with a stiff, graceless apology, she coolly brushes him off, believing that, like most annoyances, he will go away when properly snubbed. But no! The man then puts out his hand, and, not wishing to create a scene, compels her to stand up with him.

They go through the steps of the dance mutually disdainful and intent upon wounding each other. But by the time the musicians end their tune, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have traded barbs with such accuracy, they are unaccountably amused and engaged. Will this most inconvenient flirtation drive them apart - or, like silver buckles, are they a matched pair?

a lovely story, full of love and laughter. the characters are well depicted and the story is told by D's and E's points of view alternately, which makes the narration very pleasant.
i love the interaction between ODC, their strength and their fragility, the fact that they can easily look into each other 's soul.

Have read this book several times. Decided to try the narration and was not disappointed - it was so very good! The audio alternates between Darcy and Elizabeth's viewpoint very well. Both narrators were great. Loved Mr McFarlane's version of Darcy for this book and the other books by Grace Gibson. I shall forever hear and expect Ms Gibson's Darcy in his voice!

A really great p&p variation, a joy to listen to. No doubt I will listen to it again. I love the way it focuses on Darcy & Lizzy's relationship and their repartee, and not on Caroline Bingley or Wickham. The narration is wonderful.

very clever, fast paced and fun

This book started out ok. I didn’t feel the relationship or their bond much, and found Elizabeth to be a bit unlikeable. However, the latter half got increasingly dull as it read like a series of random events and conversations put together, and it was as if the notes and ideas of the author were just filled out a bit, and plonked together. “And this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened” came to mind. Lots was also retold as a memory of a character, rather than us seeing things happen on page. If you want to go that route for brevity, you’ve got to do it skilfully, else it ends up being clunky. It stopped being a story, and instead became a meandering epilogue.
