About this listen

Audible presents Silappadhikaram Revisited.

Silappadhikaram, one of the five greatest epics of Tamil literature, is about the story of Kovalan and Kannagi. This piece of literature was originally written by Ilango Adigal sometime between 4th and 6th century CE.

Kovalan and Kannagi grow up in the land of Puhar, a coastal city in the Chola Kingdom of Tamil Nadu. They get married and live a blissful marital life, until Kovalan falls for a danseuse, Madhavi. Leaving behind his home and Kannagi, Kovalan spends his money and time for Madhavi. The day, Kovalan realises that Madhavi is not loyal to him and has other men, he decides to leave her and go back to Kannagi. He realises his mistakes and decides to leave the city and start a new life. Kannagi accompanies him in the difficult journey to Madurai. The wish to begin a new life turns bitter for the couple as many unforeseen incidents take place in Madurai. But what led Kannagi to burn down the city of Madurai? What made her furious like fire? Dive in now and take a trip to the most significant moments in Tamil history.
