About this listen

It is 1884, and when a fellow landlady finds her lodger poisoned, Mrs. Hudson turns to Sherlock Holmes.

The police suspect the landlady of murder, but Mrs. Hudson insists that her friend is innocent. Upon investigating, the companions discover that the lodger, a civil servant recently returned from India, was living in almost complete seclusion, and that his last act was to scrawl a mysterious message on a scrap of paper.

The riddles pile up as aged big game hunter Allan Quatermain is spotted at the scene of the crime when Holmes and Watson investigate. The famous man of mind and the legendary man of action will make an unlikely team in a case of corruption, revenge, and what can only be described as magic …

I've read a few of Lovegrove's Holmes novels and they do pretty well to capture the atmosphere of the originals. Sometimes his author's ego pushes him to play around with the formula for the sake of it, just to be a bit different. This is one of those. Not sure that it adds much to the story apart from novelty; it's a decent story but it plays out as more of a thriller than a detective novel.

A good Holmes-ish story with a star guest

I've enjoyed all of Lovegrove's Holmes novels that I have listened to on Audible, including the Cthulu Casebooks, but I struggled with this one. I found my mind wandering on many occasions whilst listening to the novel, and found parts of the narrative faintly ridiculous. But you can't write winners all the time I guess

Not Lovegrove's best

Coming from the more supernatural stories in the series, this felt more grounded in reality and the crossover with another character’s lore was an interesting direction. The story and style fits well with the Holmes universe.

As ever, the narration is perfect!

A great addition to the series

Fantastic story - starts unassuming but develops to enormous story. Fantastic continuity to Sherlock Holmes stories.
I like the story, narration and voice actor recreating different accents - fantastic listen that proves that James Lovegrove can write a fantastic Sherlock Holmes story.

James Lovegrove is producing some truly splendid Holmes and Watson tales of late. So true to Arthur Conan Doyle’s work is this book (and others) that I have to keep reminding myself of the fact that they are not his. All made that much better by the wonderful narration. Whilst the overall story in The Devil’s Dust wasn’t quite as engrossing as the crossovers with Cthulhu I really enjoyed the “team-up” with Allan Quatermain!

Another superb tale.
