About this listen

Sherlock Holmes delves into the world of early cinema as motion picture groundbreaker Eadweard Muybridge begs him to solve a mystery that will keep you up all night.

1896. A new client at Baker Street claims he’s being threatened via the new art of the moving image …

Eadweard Muybridge, pioneer of motion picture projection, believes his life is in danger. Twice he has been almost run down in the street by the same mysterious carriage, and moreover, disturbing alterations have been made to his lecture slides. These are closely guarded, yet just before each lecture an unknown hand has defaced images depicting Muybridge himself, which he has discovered, to his horror, only as he projects them to his audience. As Holmes and Watson investigate, a bewildering trail of clues only deepens the mystery, and meanwhile, newspaper speculation reaches fever pitch. The great detective’s reputation is on the line, and may be ruined for good unless he can pick apart a mystery centered on the capturing, for the first time, of figures in motion, and the wonders of the new cinematograph.

These books are often made or not by the use of the correct narrator in this case not really suitable in my view. The plot was over dense and difficult to stick with

How over complicated

narrator sounds like he's in an elocution test. author hasn't found Conan Doyle's voice either. avoid

terrible narration, poor story

Overall not a bad storey line but for me let down by the narration, just not my cup of tea.

Not bad as a story

While Sherlock has always been rude and sure of himself this story takes it to extremes. It detracts from the story when he seems to be cruel to watson for no reason. The story is over long and appears to have a lot of plot holes. Additionally I don't think anyone these days is ever surprised when a victims has his face destroyed that he turns out not to be who everyone assumes he is. Not terrible but a challenge to finish and not really worth the effort.

I am glad this was free. It was long, boring, complicated but simple in places. Holmes is not understood by the author. He comes across as rude, arrogant, unkind, conceited and nasty with a spectrum personality disorder. He lacks the humour and intelligence he should have. He appears to just keep Watson around as someone to be ridiculed to make him look good. I am surprised Watson, who wanders through the whole story being demeaned and wanting to know what was going, on stays with Holmes or even tolerates him at all. In the end I did not care about any of the characters and just wanted this terrible story to end.
I did not like the narration of Holmes who exacerbated the personality disorder in his voice. Not worth buying and even free it’s a waste of time.

Long, dull and terrible representation of characters
