About this listen

1891. Seventeen-year-old Leonie Vernier and her brother abandon Paris for the sanctuary of their aunt's isolated country house near Carcassonne, the Domaine de la Cade. But in the nearby woods, Leonie stumbles across a ruined sepulchre - and a timeless mystery whose traces are written in blood.

2007. Meredith Martin arrives at the Domaine de la Cade as part of her research for a biography she's writing. But Meredith is also seeking the key to her own complex legacy and soon becomes immersed in the story of a tragic love, a missing girl, a unique deck of tarot cards, an unquiet soul and the strange events of one cataclysmic night more than a century ago...

Critic reviews

SEPULCHRE is a compulsive, fantastical, historical yarn. Mosse's skill lies in the precise nature of her storytelling
Ghosts, duels, murders, ill-fated love and conspiracy ... addictively readable
[Mosse is] a powerful storyteller with an abundant imagination
Brilliantly absorbing ... Richly evocative and full of compelling twists and turns
Mosse's gifts for historical fiction are considerable ... Mosse does what good popular historical novelists do best - make the past enticingly otherworldly, while also claiming it as our own
The best of the Brits ... Where Mosse really wins is in the writing department. She's the real role model there
Her narrative lyricism, beautifully drawn female characters and deft journey from the past to the present day, are also a cut above
A sure, deft momentum . . . the secrets begin to slip out thick and fast
The latest from the author of bestselling Labyrinth, this adventure will keep you engrossed

Firstly let me say that I am a fan of this series. I have both read and listened to Labyrinth and also have a printed copy of Sepulchre which is what leads me to find fault with this recording. The narrator actually does a good job at portraying the characters and I have no problem with the American accent as some reviewers have. After all, there are English narrators who read American books. No, the issue I have is that the text from which she is reading is very obviously severely edited for the American market with all English words and phrases changed to the American counterparts. Nothing wrong with that if downloading in the USA but I think most English listeners (and possibly many American ones too) would prefer to hear the original text as written by Kate Mosse. As I believe this narrator is based in the UK, perhaps the opportunity for her to read the English edition as some point...........................

Narration a problem

I was pleasantly surprised by Sepulchre, the negative reviews it received here on Audible were very discouraging and it took me almost a year to risk listening to it.
I find English narrators easier to listen to ,it always takes me a while to accustom my ears to the stronger American lilt but thought the narrator was perfectly suited to the story.
I loved the link between the Labyrinth and Sepulchre and find Kate Mosses ability to develop varying characters admirable.
I recommend this book but suggest the listener listens with an open mind; not expecting the book to be too similar to it?s predecessor

Sepulchre ( Unabridged)

Having read and adored Labyrinth I did not enjoy Sepulchre quite as much. It's still a good book and had there been an option to score it 3 and a half stars I would have done so. I think it is still well worth reading and I do not regret the purchase. Perhaps I just prefer the middle ages of Labyrinth to the Victorian France of Sepulchre.

A Little Disappointing

Enjoyed the story, but did struggle with the narrator trying to be all characters male , female, and child, with French and American accents.
I think I would have enjoyed it more if narrated by maybe two people...
Still a very good listen

Another excellent book from Kate Mosse

I have read Sepulchre several times as I am a fan of Kate Mosses' work. I'm glad I opted to listen this time around as it has given me a different view on the characters that I have created in my imagination. Labyrinth is still my favourite of the trilogy.

Well researched and we'll narrated
