About this listen

A tea-stain, that’s all it took. A tea-stain, a girl frightened of her own shadow and fate. Hell needs no more.

A moment's foolish mistake costs 16-year-old Nora her freedom and her family. Sentenced to transportation, she has to grow up fast to survive prison, the long journey, and then life as an assigned servant in Van Diemen's Land of the 1820s. She is sustained by real friendships with other prisoners, Sarah and Helen. Can anyone of them overcome the pitfalls of convict life to become pioneering settlers of modern-day Tasmania?

This is a story of love and friendship amidst the trials of 19th-century Australian colonial life.

For fans of Colleen McCullough and Kate Grenville.

I enjoyed listening to this and from the very first chapter, was drawn into the sheer injustice of the 1800s. That people were transported half way across the world for somewhat petty crimes must have been terrible in itself but the suffering goes further. From prison life to a terrifying 5 month journey, we follow the stories of not just one woman but three woman. Nora, Helen and Sarah are victims of a cruel society, their 'crimes' committed out of desperation, or for survival. The story does drag in parts and is very gloomy but then you expect this. The journey across the seas could be a book in itself, though I desperately wanted to know how they would fare in Van Diemen's Land. I enjoyed part 3 the most for this reason and despite its harrowing content, there is indeed 'light' at the end of the story.

Well written but terrible hardship
