Summary

The controversial first-hand account of what really happened in the south Atlantic skies

Sharkey Ward commanded 801 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Invincible, was senior Sea Harrier adviser to the Command, flew over sixty missions and was awarded DSC. Yet had he followed all his instructions to the letter, Britain might well have lost the Falklands War.

His dramatic first-hand story of the air war in the South Atlantic is also an extraordinary, outspoken account of inter-Service rivalries, bureaucratic interference, and dangerous ignorance of the realities of air combat among many senior commanders.

As Sharkey Ward reveals, the 801 pilots were fighting not just the enemy, exhaustion, and the hostile weather, but also the prejudice and ignorance of their own side.

Absolutely brilliant. If the senior ranks were more switched on. We might not have lost the ships we did.

Sharkey Ward is very partisan but has the experience and ability to back up his views. Not keen on the voice of the narrator but the book is absorbing and without doubt very very interesting.

Absorbing and informative

Gives a great insight into carrier flying. The complexity of operating aircraft from sea and the air battles over and around the Falklands. Also a view on the politics I feel you would find in any large organisation.

Excellent read.

Perhaps the most incisive account of the realities of the Air War over the Falklands.

This gripping and sincere account of the actions of 801 Squadron, and the internecine rivalries between the Light Blue and the Senior Service is writ large. This paints an altogether different picture to the officially accepted narrative promoted by 'authority figures' in the field which make it all the more compelling.

Highly recommended.

A salute to the mighty Sea Harrier!

This is one of the best accounts of a war I have ever have the pleasure to listen too. It is the best aviation book and the best account of the Falkland conflict. It gives an unparallel insight into what a millitary force and the service men have to put up with to fight a war, especially from inadequate leadership, interorganization rivalry and people more keen on there own own image then acctually fighting and winning a war. The boys in light blue can go and f**k themselves royaly and its not thanks to them that the managed to win the war in the Falklands.
